Happy Halloween 2009 - Comics

This year for Halloween, I'm posting two different posts to celebrate. This first post is dedicated to comics and the second one (which will be posted later today) will be dedicated to anime/manga.

This first post features scans from both the 2008 and 2009 DC Universe Halloween specials.

From the 2008 special comes two interesting scans involving Superman. Jimmy Olsen dresses up as Superman at the Daily Planet's Halloween party in the first one. In the second one, the man himself gives out candy and the kids aren't buying it. Matthew Clark does the pencils here:

And in the 2009 special, Guy Gardner gathers his fellow Green Lanterns for a Halloween shindig. I really wish this story was longer because then we'd get more than a glimpse at the wifebeater-wearing Kyle Rayner and the shirtless Hal Jordan. Mark Bagley did the pencils for these:

Final Fantasy VI Revisited.

It’s been quite some time since I have played FFVI. The last time I Played was last year in which I am almost finished the game. Because of our PC being reformatted, my game file is obviously erased and I have no chance to make a backup… till I remembered that I gave my classmate a CD of all my games in the GBA. And tada! I was replaying the game… for the nth time! But that doesn’t stop a fan to play it.

In case you are wondering about my progress, I am finished with the opera scene and about to infiltrate the Magitek Facility in Vector. Let’s talk about the opera scene.

When I first watched this scene back in 2007, the hairs on my back raised like it is some sort of a magical event that you would not forget forever and it is. Even though it is on 16-Bit with voice acting on 16-Bit, the scene is really… hair tingling. Fast forward to 2009, the scene still has the same effect on me. Woah. It’s been 2 years since I have watched it in my SNES emulator before replaying it on my GBA emulator. While watching the scene, I observed that Celes, when on front view, kinda look-like Taylor Swift. LOL. Hope that Square-Enix will remake it on the PSP simply because we want to see a decent gaming experience plus the characters are fully rendered in 3D. Seriously, who wants to see Kefka destroy the world in full widescreen glory?

Tim and Conner

I've been enjoying Adventure Comics and the most recent issue had Superboy seeing Tim Drake for the first time since returning. Francis Manapul's art is quite nice and I think Tim looks a little more like himself here than in his own series.

D.Gray-men Return

Nearly one year has passed since there's been a post here focusing on the guys of D.Gray-man. That's far too long.

To give you an idea of how much time has passed, the last D.Gray-man post mentioned that the anime was coming to DVD in 2009. As of now, three DVD sets covering the first 39 episodes of the anime are now available in America from Funimation.

While there's mostly anime artwork in today's post, you'll also find some manga and trading card artwork too.

Slam Dunk

Slam Dunk is a basketball manga by the great Takehiko Inoue, who is also well-known for Vagabond and for designing the characters for the game Lost Odyssey. The last post featuring Slam Dunk was really about featuring yaoi artist Yamane Ayano's doujinshi artwork. This time, however, it's all about the official art.

Although it was turned into a long-running anime series, there is no anime art in today's post. Only Inoue's illustrations are featured this time around. The original manga is currently being released in America by Viz Media. I'm not sure about the status of the anime.

Fairy Tail

Fairy Tail is the most recent manga by Hiro Mashima, the creator of Rave Master. Like Rave Master, Fairy Tail has also been turned into an anime series, which premiered earlier this fall.

The story revolves around the infamous mage guild of which the manga gets its name and its cast of characters. The main characters are Lucy (a girl who longs to become a full-fledged mage) and Natsu (the wide-eyed, happy-looking hero).

However, the draw of this series for me is the character named Gray. He is thoroughly comfortable without clothes and is prone to removing them at the worst possible times. As you'll see below (and in the rest of the pics), this is something the producers of the anime are really playing up.
