D. Gray-Man 73 – Kanda has Arrived!

I have just purchased last time volume 11 of D. Gray-Man and it seems that the volume I bought will take place after this episode! Anyways, previously, on D. Gray-Man. Lavi, Krory and Bookman is fighting Tyki Mikk of the Noah Clan while a giant akuma is on a rampage in Edo. At the end of the episode, General Tiedoll, and his slaves, I mean, men, Kanda and Marie have arrived.

On the left, Allen lost inside the ark; On the right, Makibaoh and his three passengers. Hashire! Hashire! Makibaoh!

Allen has just entered the ark, and it appears to look like Greece! Meanwhile while Allen is thinking of happy thoughts with the help of Komui, his comrades are fighting in Edo. In which we saw Makibaoh, I mean, Chomosuke, Krory, Lavi and Bookman flying towards the giant akuma to fight it.

This where we saw Chomosuke and her final moments before she explodes, her farewell was rather not that emotional compared to her scenes in the previous episode in which we saw Krory’s compassion towards her.

Back to Tiedoll’s Group, with orders coming from their master, Kanda and Marie left, leaving Tiedoll with a modified akuma that later left… with a blast! Sorry for the bad Deidara reference. Anyways, as Cross’ Group is still fighting the akuma and even if they tried to hit it in the head, their attacks where not that effective, in short, futile.

Meanwhile, Lavi is fighting Tyki and he had a hard time beating him. One of the fun things about their fight is that Tyki is just fighting Lavi effortlessly that in some point, it makes me feel sorry for Lavi considering that he is in a state that he is in no condition to fight, plus, he is squeezing every once of strength that he has to fight Tyki. Heck, the seals that I don’t usually see him use are always seen here!

Meanwhile, Miranda is trying her best to protect them using her Innocence, but even if how much she tried, she has no more strength to maintain it. Because of this, after Tyki beat Lavi again, he went to the place where Miranda and co. stayed.

Peak a boo. I see you.

Because of this, Tyki decided to kill Lenalee since she is the only female exorcist in the group. This is where we saw that these Finders have some use in this arc. Seriously, everytime I see them, they do anything! Even if their move is futile, one exorcist has arrived, and after almost half of the episode with no Kanda, he has arrived. FINALLY.

Ore, sanjou! (Trans. I have arrived!)

Along with that, Marie has just saved Lavi, Bookman and Krory from being smashed by the giant akuma. After some petty talk, the battle between Kanda and Tyki begins. The battle was rather quick should I say in the first round. Meanwhile, Bookman decided that Lavi should aid Kanda while Bookman, Krory and Marie will fight the akuma.

Seeing Marie using his strings was amazing. Krory’s reaction while warning Marie that his efforts were useless was rather fun to watch considering that Krory didn’t saw Marie fight. Meanwhile, back at Kanda, he fought Tyki again but it was short thanks to the Millennium Earl. This is the disappointing part of this episode. Since the episode is about Kanda’s arrival in Edo. I expected that he will do more fight scenes compared to Lavi against Mikk. Heck, Kanda just fought Tyki for at least 5 minutes, and that includes the second one!

Meanwhile, Marie is finished with his job. He already made the range enough for them to hit the head of those akuma and starts using his string technique to weaken them. Because of the range, kinda starts dual wielding! Sweet! Even with Lavi warning him that they are hard, Kanda just cut them like a piece of butter! A saving grace to this episode’s disappointing battle with Tyki. I mean, look at Lavi’s face!

Priceless.

And look at his face after this scene.

At the end of the episode, the Earl unleashes a powerful attack.

To the specifics of this episode, after her fight with the Level 3 Akuma that looks like the Joker Undead from Kamen Rider Blade, Lenalee was useless in this episode. Sure, she can’t activate her Innocence but her damsel in distress act ruined the image Lenalee left after her fight with the akuma. That image is that Black Rock Shooter pawning a Joker Undead.

Like I mentioned earlier, the fight between Yu, I mean, Kanda and Tyki was short and disappointing. Hope the next episode will redeem the weak fight between them. As for Marie, he was awesome. Nuff said.

Overall, the episode was a bit mediocre. After learning that the title was Kanda Enters, I was excited to see Kanda again considering that he is one of my favorites in DGM plus, him being voiced acted in the Filipino dub by Vincent Gutierrez (who is best known for his other swordsman role as Zoro of One Piece). But because of the bad battle pacing, and Kanda having less focus in the episode, it felt short. They should just end all the battles with Lavi and Chomosuke’s death at the previous episode!
