Before doing this review, I did a quick Wikipedia check on it and in my surprise, Tatsunoko Productions (Casshern, Yatterman) is producing this! Oh my, more reasons to blog this title! Anyways, in the first episode, we got a hobo playing children's card games in field known as Financial District, creepy Willy Wonka (I blame this) and lastly, some random college student who ended up in the hobo's situation!
For starters, I am a sucker in things that Tatsunoko Prod. produces that is why in case I heard some classic Tatsunoko title being subbed, I end up watching it and seeing a new Tatsunoko title that is not a remake, is quite surprising. Unlike the funky heroes that Tatsunoko offered us in the years, our protagonist, Kimimaro is an average college student who works two part time jobs for his future.
He has no special abilities whatsoever like the other Tatsunoko protagonist before him (namely, two mechanics who wears colorful jumpers, acyborg robot who serves a M. Bison expy). Because of this, I expect that he will grow into one fine hero because he started off as one plain character.
As for my first impression about the concept of the series, I love the fact that the Financial District is one colorful place with beings known as "Assets" fight alongside with their boss. The card game elements adds up more to the show's theme which is, instant money and for them to earn it, they must "gamble" their Assets to earn more. It is fresh and the fact that show's opening battle doesn't feature any major elements found on anime titles that involves children's card games, the producers don't have a chance to cash cow this series by selling cards based on the creatures living in the Financial District.
As for the first episode, it first starts off with a bang and gradually eases down till it leads to our protagonist and slowly ends up psychological ascreepy Willy Wonka Masakaki appears and offers Kimimaro the chance to join the Financial District as one of its Entrepreneurs. It was fun how Masakaki trolls Kimimaro in this episode, pure entertainment. If there is one aspect about this episode that I really liked is the fact that Kimimaro is poor which gives him more reasons to gamble his future in this shady Financial District!
Overall, it is one exciting first episode that gives me high hopes about the upcoming episodes in the future. What's more is that the fact that it talks about getting money from some shady figure is one fun concept to watch. Asides from the story, the animation was really good. If there is something I can praise about the animation is that it has a good balance between CGI and traditional.
