Marvel Anime: X-Men 07-09 – The Mysterious Yui Sasaki

In this review, we met Yui Sasaki, Prof. X’s past acquaintance… or something along those lines or something more than that, more secondary mutations that caused me to remember that mutation scene from the first X-Men movie and lastly, Hellfire Club’s I mean, Inner Circle’s Mastermind makes his official appearance in the main story.

To put it simply, these episodes are all about Yui Sasaki and her involvement with mutants, from her past relationship with Professor X until her involvement in trying to stop the cases of second mutation in the Tohoku region. As for the character itself, she is one idealistic woman but not a strong woman; hence, she easily breaks down in the later episodes. The only thing that is interesting about her is her relationship with Professor X which surprising, she had a kid with Charles!

Speaking of Charles, he also appeared in these episodes due to his past relationship with Ms. Sasaki. Also, she is the one who brought the Black Bird in Japan which cause him to end being trapped in someone’s mind game. As for the rest of the X-Men, one of the things that I can highly praise is finally; Cyclops’ issue with Frost has been closed. What’s more is that they finally revealed on who is responsible behind the illusion of Emma being responsible with Jean’s death. If there is one thing I observed after everything was cleared up regarding Emma’s involvement with Jean’s death is that Scott finally ended up his “emo mode” and starts acting more like the team leader which we got a glimpse of his performance in episode six.

As for the secondary mutations in these episodes, is it those mutations or me reminded me of those kaijins from various Japanese hero shows? I mean, starting with the origin story until how they were defeated, it feels too Japanese for me. What’s more is that after they were defeated, they revert back to normal which is similar to what happen to the monsters in Kamen Rider W once they are defeated by W.

And finally, as for what is happening all around the place in the three episodes, it was full of twist and turns that I didn’t expect to happen this fast that I barely had time to recuperate after the amount of twist and turns that I witnessed. My only disappointment is that Blade didn’t have a cameo in any of the episodes since as established in the earlier two Marvel Anime Series, a cameo from the next hero is expected to happen around episode 4-9. Guess they tried to make this show different from the other two! Another minor disappointment is Mastermind’s two henchmen, which felt too generic in my opinion.

Overall, those three episodes were really good that the cliffhanger at the end of episode nine gets me excited in the next episode. Also, the fact that they closed a lot of necessary plot points to close before introducing new characters makes this series better compared to the previous two in which there are tendencies they keep on forgetting some minor plot points that were later forgotten in the series. Speaking of plot points, were are the U-Men? Is Mastermind also the boss of U-Men?
