A FOREIGN KAMEN RIDER FAN FILM BACK IN 1984?!

To be exact, an AMERICAN Kamen Rider fan film back in 1984! Last month, Justice ACE found a very rare Kamen Rider fan film called, 3 Riders vs. General Dark in which fandom pillar, August Ragone, Oriental Cinema's Damon Foster and the guy who directed Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight, Steve Wang were responsible in making it!

In the first part, Kamen Rider V3 rescues a man who was abducted by Ghost Shocker (the name of the organization in the fan film) and fought one of its monsters, later Kamen Rider Super-1 appears... and the editing of the film looked great back then!

In this second part, Kamen Rider 2 makes his appearance... and they used the classic version! Awesome!

Anyways, here's something that August Ragone commented about these videos in the original post from Justice ACE regarding this fan film which includes how they made the film and who are responsible for it.

THE 3 KAMEN RIDERS VS. GHOST SHOCKER (1987) was one of the many video projects we did for fun with Damon Foster back in the day (such as ULTRA CYBORG and HOT DOGS ON THE RUN). It was conceived by myself and Barrie Evans, and I wrote the original script and directed the first version of the film. This was an entrant in a Kamen Rider fan film contest sponsored by Ishimori Productions and Toei back in 1987, shot mostly around the Cal State Hayward University campus.

The costumes were made by Barrie Evans (the Super-1 Henshin Belt was the toy made by Popy), and while the Kamen Rider 2 helmet was the vinyl kit issued by General Products and the time, the helmets for V3 and Super-1 were full, thick latex masks made by Steve Wang. The kaijin mask was a store-bought monster mask, and the main villain’s cybernetic arm and leg were actual suit pieces given to Barrie at Toei Studios, and were originally used on DIMENSION WARRIOR: SPIELVAN.

After the first version was “in the can”, I also supervised the original ADR, Foley and Music tracks, it was later re-edited by Damon and Barrie. I never had my original materials returned to me, which were mastered on Broadcast-quality video (I don’t know what Barrie did with those materials, which is a shame, because I was never re-imbursed for it, either). Still, with all that being said, we had a fun time making this short film.

A few years later, a quick clip of behind-the-scenes footage was used included in an episode of Fuji Television’s NARUHODO THE WORLD, in which Damon, Barrie and myself were interviewed about our obsession with Tokusatsu. This episode featured Americans who were deep into “Japanese things”. Also appearing in the Tokusatsu segment was noted artist and fan, Alex Wald. Our segment in this episode of NARUHODO THE WORLD was shot in San Francisco in late 1992, and aired in Japan in early 1993.

So guys, what can you say about this classic Kamen Rider fan film?

Kamen Rider V3 02 – Damn You, V3!

And you thought Yusuke is the only guy who transformed inside of a burning church!

And I once thought that Narutaki is the only guy who likes swearing a Rider’s name every 2 minutes! Anyways, Rider 1 and 2 are back and continues to help V3 on how to use his powers and do their own level of badassery before they decided to let the safety of the planet left with the hands of a newbie, I mean, worthy successor.

This is the episode where Shiro and his counterpart, V3 shined the most. The Double Riders are in the sidelines and with that, I can focus more on how Shiro moved in this episode. To be honest, I thought that Shiro will be fueled with revenge when he will face Scissors Jaguar, I was wrong. He is calm and now has this heroic aura in him. This is what I admired in V3 in his episode, he never let his revenge be on top in his head, rather prioritize with defeating his opponent.

About V3’s abilities, clearly we saw his level of being a newbie. He is not aware about the V3 Hopper, a device that will aid him in looking for running bad guys from afar or how he will control his strength in human form and most especially, how to do his finisher! This is the part in which we saw Rider 1 aiding him and perfectly seen in the sidelines and let V3 do most of the job. I liked this bit; it has this sense of senior-junior relationship between the two.

As for this episode, typical Ishinomori dark church plot which as we all know of for those who are uninitiated, if the setting involved churches, most of the time, the priest is clearly the bad guy. This isn’t the first time it happened and this would not be the last. I mean, look at Kamen Rider Kiva, the final battle of the series has something to do with Doujin Bishop playing a church organ inside a church to revive the original King!

My only problem with the episode’s plot is that unlike most Kamen Rider episodes that I watch which involves evil priest and churches, they never played with the mystery aspect much that I loved in those other episodes. It immediately jumped with the conclusion. But I guess there is a reason why they never played much with the mystery aspect of it because the Double Riders will do something great in this episode!

About that, the scene which involves them fighting Kame Bazooka was probably, one good send off for the Double Riders and a good transition between the Double Riders and V3. That scene alone in which they use their full power to defeat Kame Bazooka, fly away from Tokyo was a strong scene, and how they ended was quite a bang that V3 witnessed.

The final message by those two was emotional it has this feeling that they will be gone for a long time and the two trust V3 to protect the world while they are gone. In short, this is officially V3’s show and we will not see the Double Riders till the time it is needed for them to appear.

Overall, the second episode of the series is what I can say, the proper transition between the current Riders and V3. The final scene of this episode alone gave us this assurance that we will not see the Double Riders for a while and that they will have a minor role as the series progress. As for the fights, the fights are really good considering the lack of resources they have back in the day, the really made a good use of the cameras for them to execute V3’s Double Kick.

In the next episode, we will see V3 fight not one, but two Destron mutants! Can V3 defeat a giant fly with a TV stuck in its head or a squid that has two LPG tanks attached in his back?

Kamen Rider V3 01 – Rider no. 3: His Name is V3! Review

The world is now in peace thanks to the Double Riders defending it from GelShocker but right now, a new threat has arrived to ruin this peace… and Shiro Kazami ended up getting involved with it by accident. Yep, this is the first episode of Kamen Rider V… 3!

To those who are expecting that we will see a lot of V3 action in the first episode, let me break it to ya, but no. V3 only made his formal appearance at the near end of the episode while his human form, Shiro appearance most of the time in this episode so let’s talk about Shiro.

Shiro Kazami is living a normal life with his family and it seems that he has close ties with his younger sister (for Kamen Rider W fans, imagine Shiro is Terui) until one day, he saw a man melt in a street corner besides a manhole. That event changed his life that started the bad guys trying to kill him not once, but four times! I find Shiro in the first episode a little plain until at the near end of the episode in which he is willing to give up his humanity just to defeat the bad guys. I guess I should watch the next ep for me to see more of Shiro’s personality.

Since V3 made a short appearance in this episode, I will comment on his design. His mouthpiece is a little distracting but the belt design is gorgeous! The giant V in the middle and the two windmills on the side gave a good implication that he is better than his seniors are! As for his overall body design, it looks good.

For the entire episode, I love that Oya-san and the Double Riders are a little relaxed in this episode. It clearly gives a sign that the world is at peace and they have nothing to worry about and as the episode progress, their doubts of the world being at peace is increasing, and them being relaxed changed as they worry on how to protect Shiro from his attackers!

For V3's origin story, for starters, V3 is the first Rider who is modified into a cyborg because he is about to die. My first impression about this is that, I find it pretty neat. I mean, he wants to become a cyborg in the first place to avenge his family and because he has proven his worth when he almost died in saving the Double Riders, I guess it is good that they modified Shiro into V3.

If there is a scene in this episode that I love, that would be how Scissors Jaguar killed Shiro’s family. It was strong scene that I find it one of the most iconic scenes in the Kamen Rider franchise especially the scenes after it where Shiro swears revenge against Destron.

For the fights, it is standard Old School Kamen Rider action. The suit acting has this heroic feel that I find missing in newer Kamen Rider shows and the action found in this episode has good stunt coordination. Since the effects are a little old school, I will reserve my comments on this.

Overall, the first episode never felt like V3’s show even if it is credited in the opening sequence, but more like Shiro Kazami with the Double Riders getting all the action. But it was a good premise and it show's promise. The fact that the Double Riders are in it gave us a good transition between the veterans with the newbie. Can't wait on how they will pass the torch on V3!

On the next review, we will have V3 kicking ass... finally!

#1, #2 and V3 Returns on Let's Go Kamen Rider!

The three original Riders actors, Hiroshi Fujioka, Takeshi Sasaki and Hiroshi Miyauchi, now on their 60's are back for the the first time in 37 years and will return to the upcoming Kamen Rider film, OOO - Den-O - All Riders: Let's Go Kamen Rider as Rider 1, Rider 2 and V3 respectively!

Their last appearance together was in the 1974 movie, Kamen Rider X: Five Riders Vs. King Dark and on the last episode of Kamen Rider Stronger (below) in which they appeared in their human forms at the end of the said series.

The producer, Shichirou Shirakura said, "The children 40 years ago watched Kamen Rider and they are now parents. Their children are watching the modern Kamen Rider. Together, they can watch this movie and enjoy it together."

The three of them will be dubbing their voices during the start of February. Rider 1 and Rider 2 will be greeting each other by shouting "Ichimonji!" and "Hongo," while V3 will do his famous "V3" shout. Old fans will surely shed a tear when seeing this scene.

The upcoming movie, revealed last month, marks a milestone for the franchise as this is its 40th anniversary. All of the Kamen Riders up until now are expected to appear, though the main characters will be Kamen Rider OOO and Kamen Rider NEW Den-O. With the help of Kamen Rider V3 (now a major character), who saves OOO earlier in the said film, they will face off against Kamen Rider 1 and Kamen Rider 2, who have joined the evil organization, Shocker.

OOO - Den-O - All Riders: Let's Go Kamen Rider opens on April 1.
