TV5 & Animax, Big Winners on Otaku's Verdict 2010!

...and the results are in!

Last January 16, Sunday, ZEN Otaku Honbu has released the results of Otaku's Verdict 2010 via their results show. Even with some technical issues, they were able to pursue with the job of telling us the winners of OV 2010 and here is the lowdown of the winners! And for the first time in the history of Otaku's Verdict, the Anime Status Rating for 2010 was rated EXCELLENT by Pinoy anime fans! Most fans have mixed reactions with the result considering the year we have in terms of anime. Like, Nick on ABS-CBN, TV5 ANiMEGA in a state of comatose but gave us amazing titles this year and the like.

Aside from that, Federico "Freddie" M. Garcia (FMG) is awarded by Otaku's Verdict as the 1st OV IMPACT Award winner for 2010 for his contribution in the Philippine Anime Scene. This OV IMPACT Award was voted and debated by the executive committee of Otaku's Verdict along with some of its partners (to be exact, Orends: Range). Wondering what is his contribution and who are the other nominees with this award? Just wait for the full article that will be written by ZOH!

Garcia was cited for his invaluable achievement for Philippine Anime scene when he was the head of GMA-7 during the Marcos Era when the network aired Voltes V. He was also the first to initiate the use of Filipino language on all foreign series, which includes anime.

Lucky Star and Golgo 13 Returns on TV5 Today

Rumors circulating around the net that Lucky Star and Golgo 13 is set to return on TV5... until today, it is confirmed in my very own eyes. Yep, it is official, Lucky Star and Golgo 13 returns respectively at 12nn and 1pm.

What bothers me is this, when will they finish Gundam 00, D.Gray-Man and Fullmetal ALchemist: Brotherhood? TV5 still has a debt to its loyal anime fans.

Extremely Retro M. Pacquiao Fights to replace TV5 ANiMEGA?!

We saw the ad on TV, most of us can't believe it. To those who haven't saw it, here's the video posted by theBlockerPH on YouTube.

Seriously, what's wrong with TV5 right now?! ANiMEGA is one of the main branches of TV5, heck, you might say one of the walls that keeps TV5 together back then along with Talentadong Pinoy and the defunct TEN: The Evening News. Right now, it seems that they are acting like those other two. Hope they have an explanation about this, considering that 11am timeslot seems to be empty.

Code Geass R2 Final: TV5 vs. HEROtv - The Final Comparison

Everyone remembers the epic censorship that happened on Code Geass R2 that ruined the drama that was being build up in the entire episode. To those who have forgotten, here's the scene on top of you and the one below you.

TV5 ANiMEGA Schedule Revamp

Due to the changes that is happening right now on TV5 starting last Monday, it seems that ANiMEGA is right now being affected with it. On their official fanpage, they changed their profile picture. From Ed's scene in which he is pointing at Alphonse to Allen's appearance in the first season.

It seems that the FMA: B reruns on Saturdays are axed, or maybe it was just moved on a later timeslot after Gundam 00. I will update on this matter if I have time.

UPDATE: 5Max Movies is being aired on Friday, followed by Lokomoko U. Same case with TV5 ANiMEGA last Saturday. Even if it was advertised for 4 hours, after Gundam 00, we have Lourd de Veyra's Lupet, making the whole block, 3 hours. Where is our FMA: B?

FMA: Brotherhood 47 - Pride, Daddy Issues, and Child Abuse

Because of my crappy TV5 signal, I wasn't able to watch Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood like I planned. Even though I am watching it via http://hayag.com/shake, it felt like I am watching anime raws. The most logical thing to do is download the eps, watch it and watch it again in an another computer with audio... so yeah.

Anyways, back at the episode. Previously, Pride has arrived with Gluttony, body jacked Al's body and right now, we are revealed that he is in an trance and talking to someone.

Meanwhile, Ed, Greed-Ling and those two chimeras are going to some town in which they know that Hohenheim is there. Yes, since this is Ed we are talking about and we know his daddy issues, he punched his dad. 

The Possession of Alphonse Elric.

After learning the truth about his father and delivers his message coming from Pinako about his mom's last words, he left. The party is now headed to Central, and by their surprise, Al is there... and like I said, he was body jacked by Pride.

Dynamic Entry

Enough with the short summary, here's what I liked about the episode. Aside from the fact of seeing good ol' Ling back, Lan Fan's entrance was epic. I mean, she used her newly created Automail to fight Gluttony! Seeing Ed punched his own father was rude and second, good.

First things first, we know that Ed has some issues regarding his father so its natural that he will punch him to "lighten up" his hurt feelings towards him. Add the fact the he learned that his father is a living Philosopher's Stone, that would rather give me a hard time accepting him as his own father. Speaking of Hohenheim, we saw his other side again this time, weeping for Trisha's last message.

Child abuse ensues.

One of the things that I liked about this episode is more action from the chimeras which I tend to forgot their names considering that they never did anything major until now. Seriously, seeing Heinkel (The lion chimera) beat up Pride, a homunculus who is stuck inside a body of a kid, felt like the scene was a child abuse scene and there is one scene in which we saw how innocent looking Pride is.

Aside from certain spaces, Pride's obvious weakness, the lack of light is being emphasized in this episode and it was both an advantage and disadvantage on both parties. Advantage because considering that Pride is using shadows, they can easily beat him, disadvantage because they can't see anything... but in Gluttony's case, he can smell them and on Ling's case, he can sense them.

Overall, the episode was decent, not that spectacular but worth talking about.

FMA: B 46-47 Today!

Just today, we have just a confirmation that today, we will see new episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood on TV5! Like they always did, they have posted some screenshots on this day's episode in their Facebook fanpage.The screenshots for episode 47 will be posted by the fanpage Admin later.

Golgo 13 01 – At Pin-Hole! Review

 The name's Duke. Duke Togo.

Due to the events of the Quirino Grandstand Hostage Taking, I suddenly remembered a certain assassin, a sniper to be exact named Duke Togo aka Golgo 13 who hits all his targets in whatever distance 100% accurately. Thanks to my LSS, Take the Wave, the first OP theme of the anime, I decided to download episodes 1 and 7. Here is the review of its first episode.

The series kicks off in a plain in which a guy wants to go the bathroom, but since the plain is about to experience turbulence and as we all know, everyone must return to their seats, wear their seatbelts but this guy, wants to go to the bathroom. After being confronted by someone, it turned out to be he is a hijacker and hijacks the plane. He wants to go to Colombia but the plane needs to refuel so, they took a stop over in Dallas.

Meanwhile, in a US prison, an Asian was freed because someone needs his skills and his name is Duke Togo. Opening credits starts to roll. If you watched the TV5 ANiMEGA telecast this year, you might noticed the rather neat editing they did on the opening sequence. Want to know why? There is a scene in which we saw a lady’s butt and there is one scene in which we saw nipples of a blonde lady which in the TV5 telecast, they simply grayed it out to make it look like that the blonde girl was never focused.

After the OP credits, let’s go back to the plane. The police now surround him and the plane is being refueled. Back in the prison, we saw Duke left the building and welcomed by a CIA and a FBI agent. After their brief introductions, the agent then asked Golgo to kill the hijacker. It turned out to be he is an informant of the Pentagon regarding on drug syndicates and the like. In exchange on his services, they gave him military info little did Pentagon know that he is planning to sell military secrets to other countries. Due to the tight passport check in international flights, he decides to hijack a plane for domestic flights so that he would not take those inspections.

At first, Duke wants to decline the offer even if the agent offered him his minimum fee, $ 3,000,000, yes, that is his minimum fee, but because of the challenge of the agent about him being a professional assassin, he accepts the offer. On a secluded area, inside a pink car has all the information Golgo needs for the mission… and leaves the area with. His. Pink. Car. O_O

Back at the hijacker, the police want to kill him right now thus someone suggested on using snipers but because of the distance and they do not know who can shoot on a long distance, that suggestion was dropped. Back at Golgo, he went into a bar rides an elevator going down along with an aide, and was pointed to Dave a gunsmith.

After Dave gave him his best gun, Golgo uses it to practice it. After saying the problems about the gun, and asked him to fix the gun for three hours, in which according to Dave is impossible. This where he starts to screw the rules because he has money and so, Dave accepts the job offer thanks to amount offered by Golgo.

Back at the hijacker, the idea was again put into consideration but this time, the agents from earlier are back and said that there is someone who can do it and he is busy preparing right now. This is where in the TV5 telecast the censorship ensues and they have a good reason for it!

While Dave is fixing the gun, Golgo is busy having sex with a prostitute! As we saw Dave fix the gun, flashes of Duke doing the deed are seen on the screen. In the TV5 edit, those scenes where remove and instead we have a scene in which Dave is fixing the gun. Ladies and Gentleman, TV5 is safe from MTRCB!

After doing the deed and the prostitute demanding for more in which Golgo declines (This scene was aired in the TV5 telecast BTW), the mafia who demands that certain Asian’s head because he killed a mafia boss prior to the series knew Duke’s location and starts shooting his door! After we saw Golgo’s gun skills, he left the building with the prostitute, bewildered on the events.

Meanwhile, the refueling is over. To give Golgo more time, they decided to use the snipers to shoot the tire. Because of the flat tire, it gave them more time to wait for Golgo.

Back at Golgo, he receives the gun from Dave and upon seeing the laptop that the direction of the plane is different, Golgo was just silent and leaves the place. He is the guy who never leaves his mission. Cool. Back at the airport, a small plane arrives from the tarmac of the airport. Golgo has arrived. He positions himself, loads the bullet, aims and hits the target on the head. The hijacker is now dead. Everyone is safe.

Wow. Golgo Broadcasting! Wow. Errors in a US Broadsheet in the Header!

The next day, we saw on the newspaper the headlines. According to it, an FBI agent killed the hijacker. Dave knew that Golgo was successful and just smiled.

On to the review, when I first watched it with some cuts (which was necessary considering they aired a seinen/adult anime title at 7pm!), it never ruined the fun factor of episode. The episode tells us on how badass Golgo was. It tells us most on Golgo’s personality. He is cautious thanks to his personality that he wants a person to came in a car first before he will enter the vehicle.

Aside from learning about Golgo’s personality, we learned that the mafia hates him because of what he did proper to the series and based on what I remember, this is not the last time we will see them. We also learned about his knowledge in the use of guns. He is specific in terms of his rifle, the weight, the proper calibration, the recoil, everything that is related to it.

We also learned that this is not the first time in the assassin business considering that the CIA and FBI know him and he knew that those two agencies never worked together nor cooperate to each other. In addition, we learned about his reputation as an assassin and that he is someone you should not mess with.

My problem with the first episode is that the first few parts are boring especially the parts that they are talking about the demands of the hijacker.

Overall, the first episode is great to watch if you are into assassins and snipers, this is the show for you. However, if you were a younger audience, I would not recommend this show for you due to those “scenes,” even if they were just random shots of Duke doing the deed… with no reaction. I am dead serious he is worst that Yuki Nagato in terms of their facial expressions.

FMA: B on TV5 Will Be Back on Track

Just today, the admin of TV5 ANiMEGA's official fanpage has just posted this.

Please be advised that New Episode sof FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: Brotherhood on TV5 will resume in a weeks or two, and We really hope na tuloy-tuloy na ito (Trans. We hope that this will continue!)! Keep it here dito sa TV5 AniMEGA!

Yesterday and their replay today, they aired episodes 43-44, contrary to the reported back to episode 1 last week. Hope they would finish the entire series this year!

Sidenote: Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge returns for the nth time on TV5 via TV5 Kids this Monday at 5:30pm replacing Special A.

FMA: B Returns to Episode 1... Great.

Last Friday, as you noticed, they only new episode they aired is episode 45... and just last Friday (Sorry guys, I am late in this update because I am not online!), they made this official statement:

Mga Kapatid, Humihingi po muli kami ng dispensya. Pansamantalang mapuputol ang pagpapalabas ng mga bagong episodes ng FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: Brotherhood. Pero babalik po ulit sa Episode 01 ang programa, simula sa Biyernes.

We hope we resume the programming as soon as possible, at Maraming Salamat sa inyong Pag-unawa.

Translation: For our TV5 viewers, we apologize that we will not air new episodes of FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: Brotherhood. But we will return to the 1st episode of the program, starting this Friday.

My theory for this move? The other episodes are not yet dubbed... or they haven't purchased it. But hey, at least to those who haven't started yet with FMA: B, they have time to catch up.

TV5 ANiMEGA: Two Years Strong

August 11, 2008. It was 5:30pm back then; I arrived home and opened my TV to check if there is something good since back then, I am loosing hope on alternative programming. All the shows on other stations where the same, game shows, reality shows, crappy drama with the same plot with a different gimmick and all that crap.

I station surfed until I hit the jackpot, Avatar: The Last Airbender, a series that I just finished dubbed in Filipino. At first I was like, Katara’s voice sucks and all that. After it ended, an anchor-VJ type character of the newly rebooted ABC Station named, Kara Eriguel said that they are airing some anime. As an otaku, it alerted considering that those titles, namely: Shakugan no Shana and Yamato Nadeshiko: The Wallflower is not familiar to my ears because of the fact that I don’t have a DSL internet connection or cable (And apparently, cable never aired those titles!).

Anyways, I decided to check it out considering that there is no primetime anime block in any of the main TV Stations in the country. They aired Shakugan no Shana’s full OP credits after Alastor’s brief narration, something those other two networks are not doing since 2005. After the first ep of the said show, they aired the ED credits in full and what is surprising, they aired a preview! The only anime title that aired a preview here in the Philippines is the DragonBall Trilogy! After that, me and my brother talked about the show, my younger brother liked the show, while me, I am sorta liked it and sorta hated it.

The next show was Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge or what was advertised as Yamato Nadeshiko: The Wallflower. A romantic comedy title, my type, the dubbing was brilliant. I was at the edge of my seat laughing along with brother and our helper. And so, TV5’s Anime Block became part of our daily sked since then.

Since TV5 was just in its early rebooted days, I checked out their Saturday and Sunday skeds, those sked are rerun slots of the eps that aired this week. Cool! I have the time to catch up!

For the following months, those titles where known throughout the country. YamaNade became iconic to viewers that it became one of the top searches in Yahoo! Philippines back then along with Joyce Jimenez' car accident. Fans want to see the second season of Shakugan no Shana, while for me, I want to see something fresh.

After two reruns and an incomplete third run, they finally made their biggest surprise. It was advertised back then that they will air Mai-HiME, replacing YamaNade on the 6:30pm timeslot. It was a clue on things to come. After this, on Monday, viewers learned this, SnS is now on its second season, Mai-HiME but wait, there’s more. Noein a critically acclaimed title but quite underrated aired AFTER Mai-HiME, giving the humble anime timeslot an upgrade! It is now more than an hour and Code Geass follow it The once 1 hour anime timeslot made history, it is now two hours.

After those titles aired, those show where later replaced by Masked Rider Blade, Azumanga Daioh, Black Blood Brothers later replaced by Coyote Ragtime Show and Fushigi Yuugi, the third title that jumped over. The once two-hour anime block is now known as TV5 ANiMEGA, which later claimed to fame as the country’s premiere anime block.

Their fist year run was a success, attaining good feedback from anime fans that did not have the sources to watch their favorite titles legally. The block won praises from the online community and negative feedback for the dubbing of some titles. Still, 2008 was a good year for the anime block, but that will change in 2009.

2009 was both good and bad for the one-year-old anime block. Here is why. This is the year where they broke records in acquiring anime titles. This year, they aired Special A, 5 months after it aired in Japan, something that other cable network nor local TV station has done before.

Aside from that, a title that seemed to be branded as “untouchable to be aired here in the Philippines” by fans where touched by TV5, yep I am talking to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. When I was checking on their forums, I learned that Kyoto Animation, that one who is responsible in the said title is strict in terms of licensing their titles overseas and as far as I know, there is no KyoAni title that aired here in the country until Haruhi came along. Haruhi is supposed to air along with Toradora! (A title that ended on March of the same year) but because of some set backs such as the dubbing the episodes, it never did after months later, it aired but it never had a complete run.

Aside from that, they did the rather impossible. They aired Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, a title that is still being aired in Japan, 7 weeks after it aired its first episode! Surprising, yes but it is not their biggest surprise. They aired the second season of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. Everyone thought it would be smooth sailing for the block but there was a twist in the story.

After six months of airing new titles, Toradora! went on an Endless Eight and never had a chance to air its 18th episode, along same with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood that after it aired its 7th episode, it returned to its 1st episode. Other titles where on a rerun streak such as Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. The following six months where reruns and a chance to those new to the anime block to catch-up on what they missed last year. Rumor has it that TV5 was on bankruptcy that the only thing that is keeping them alive is their weekend block.

But everything changed when they went on a new management this year. Early this year, the rerun streak continues until this March, new titles started to come in. First was Lucky Star, another Kyoto Animation title that replaced The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya surprisingly. Golgo 13 and D. Gray-Man came in next and Toradora! had a complete run. The rest, like they say is history, early this year, new titles seem to pour in every month until the end of May, ANiMEGA will take a break.

It was on the second or third week of May when broadsheets published a schedule for TV5. ANiMEGA was axed out with Asian Drama replacing it. It bothered the entire online anime community in this change that they checked TV5 ANiMEGA’s Facebook page, its forums and bloggers were panicking about it. But that week, no revamp was scheduled. They were able to finish Clannad and aired its OVA, Tomoyo: Another World. Casshern Sins ended the following week with two episodes missing (According to a source.). During Casshern Sins’ last week, ads for the upcoming dramas aired almost every minute. Its official, TV5 ANiMEGA will bid farewell… for now.

On their Facebook Page, they have made the official announcement. The said post confirmed the schedule seen on broadsheets. Many fans that commented that it officially ended anime here in the Philippines, its end resulted to a mass exodus of fans those later created forums, Facebook pages, and the like. But they made a promise, they will return. Like in American Idol that takes a break after it ended one season, TV5 ANiMEGA has just took a break.

“Sabihin lang natin na tapos na ang first season ng ANiMEGA. (Let’s just say that ANiMEGA’s first season is over.)” Those where the paraphrased words the admin said, even if ANiMEGA is gone in primetime, anime still exist on TV5, thanks to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Yatterman and Street Fighter II V.

After the block ended, some abused this time to gather anime viewers on their channel. It was those two months that it seemed that TV5 will now have competition in the anime ring. Until that last two weeks of July, they made the official announcement via a small side-promo that I saw while watching Ben 10. ANiMEGA will return this August 7. In addition, they made this announcement on their Facebook page. It became one of the major topics in the Pinoy online anime community. Questions, such as what titles they will air? Will D.Gray-Man continue and the like. Until on August 1, they made the official announcement. Gundam 00 is heading to their channel along with the return of D.Gray-Man, Azumanga Daioh reruns and FMA: B reruns that aired last Friday.

Everyone waited on August 7, the day the King has returned to seat on its throne. Fans where not disappointed with its return, D.Gray-Man continued where it left last time and Gundam 00 received positive feedback regarding on the dub… along with some disappointments (SUNOHARA WAS LOST IN DOUBLE O! HARO’S VOICE NOT KAWAII ENOUGH!). Even with that, its return went smoothly.

As of today, its fans on its Facebook Fanpage are over 9000, along with other fans that doesn’t have a Facebook account. More than a dozen titles that aired on the block, with more titles that will air in the following months, the question that bothers me right now, is this. Along with the changing TV5 network, will ANiMEGA stay for more than 2 years? Or it will end up into rumble like the other anime blocks that aired before it. I don’t know what’s the longest running anime block here in the Philippines, but one thing for sure. As long as they would still look back to its roots as the one who changed the shape of anime here in the Philippines, I would not worry about the future of ANiMEGA, because I know, this block is on good hands.

FMA: Brotherhood Ep 41 on TV5 - The Return of Epic Censorship

It's like Code Geass R2 all over again, accept it is necessary to do it!

Last week's episode of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, we have witness the return of epic censorship, and by epic I mean, this.

To those who have wondered why for me it is necessary for them to censor that episode, it is because if you watched the original Japanese version while eating your dinner (or lunch if you have watched the replay), you might puke your dinner (or lunch). Why? Let the original version speak for itself.

Plus, add the fact that Ed is asking the Chimera to pull the metal shaft out from his body! Imagine it while eating your dinner (or lunch) to make matters worse, imagine that you are eating dinuguan for dinner (or lunch) or any dish that has something to do with blood!

Since I want to watch that scene in its original footage without any alterations in Filipino, hope that TV5 will release official DVD's of the series. 

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 on TV5 Promos

TV5 surely knows how to tease its fans! Here's the full trailer of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 that will air tomorrow at 2pm. Along with it are teasers that includes soundbytes from each Gundam Meister. I tried my best to look for Setsuna's soundbyte, but I failed.

Gundam vs. Gundam NEXT: ANiMEGA Edition!

Last time, I plurked or tweeted (To those who are following my Twitter account), that since TV5 now has Gundam 00, they are now ready to start the real network wars, Gundam style!

To those who don't get it, GMA aired Gundams Wing, G and X while ABS-CBN aired SEED and SEED Destiny. Because of the Plurk feature that allows the user's Plurks to be automatically posted in Facebook, kevinkun saw that comment and made this.

In the TV5 Corner, Gundams Exia and Virtue on the GMA-ABS-CBN Alliance, Wing Zero and Freedom! Let the battle begin!

The game used is the PSP game, Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam vs. Gundam Next. Kudos to kevinkun for making this video!

TV5 ANiMEGA's Sked Confirmed

TV5 ANiMEGA's Facebook Page has just confirmed their official schedule. Speculation aside, here it is.

As you can see, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was moved in an earlier time. To those who don't remember, D.Gray-Man was on the spot after Azumanga Daioh. Along with that, the fanpage's admin has just confirmed about Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It will be a rerun of the episode that aired last Prime Times 5 Friday (Which is by the way, part of the station's TST Promo more information about that in Anime Kabayan's blog entry). Episodes that will air this week are episodes 41-42. 

The question that right now bothers fans is, is the D. Gray-Man run will be the continuation of the postponed run last time? Stay tuned.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 on TV5 ANiMEGA Sked Confirmed

Just earlier, TV5 ANiMEGA's Facebook Page Admin has just confirmed the time Mobile Suit Gundam 00 will premiere this Saturday, August 7. Let's just have the admin say it.

It's safe to assume that:

11am - 12nn - Azumanga Daioh

12nn - 01pm - D. Gray-Man

01pm - 02pm - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

02pm - 03pm - Mobile Suit Gundam 00

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Flies to TV5 ANiMEGA!

After teasing us earlier about the new title that they will air, finally! They just made the big reveal, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (Pronounced as Double O), will fly to TV5 ANiMEGA along with their revealed line-up. Based on this, it seems that Lucky Star was axed in the line-up, with the return of D. Gray-Man and after that, and replays of episodes that aired on last Friday's run of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood here are replays of the episodes that aired last Friday (Note: The FMA: B bit needs confirmation).

TV5 ANiMEGA returns this August 7, Saturday from 11am-3pm with two episodes per title.

The Return of TV5 ANiMEGA

While watching Ben 10 on TV5, a small ad that says, "Magbabalik na ang ANiMEGA (ANiMEGA will Return)." Yes, TV5's famed anime block is set to return but unlike what most people expected that it will return to Primetime, it will return on Saturday, August 7 from 11am-3pm. If you do the math, it is 4 hours worth of anime time! Not a bad deal!

But the question is, what are the titles? How will they air the titles? Stay tuned.
