It's Super Hero Time! Thank you, Cartoon Network Philippines for sorta bringing it here.
Last Sunday, I stayed on my cousin’s house. Since I know they have cable, I ask him to wake me up if it is Kamen Rider Kabuto. I woke up at 6:30am, two hours earlier. I decided to take another round of sleep. My cousin woke me up just in time for Power Rangers Jungle Fury, the first show in Cartoon Network’s Super Hero Time! I mean, Toonami block.
Finally, after five TV series, the Rangers have no super powers… based on the part I started watching it was by the way, in the middle of the show, if my estimation is correct, about 18 or 16 minutes left in the air time. While watching the show, I know it will still be the classic PR scene, enemy appears, Ranger appears, transform, fight, then if enemy dies he will be revived as a giant monster. Rangers summon Zords, went inside the Zords and kill the monster. End of episode… or so I thought. This enemy left an egg in which I thought, after he left it, the “To Be Continued” sign will appear, but no. It didn’t. For the first time in my life, I saw two boss fights in one episode. Sweet.
Now for Kabuto. To be honest, I stopped watching Kabuto at episode 11 because of two reasons. Reason number 1, I am waiting it to be aired in free TV and reason number 2, I am addicted to Kamen Rider Den-O also, I am watching the weekly releases of Double/W. Back to Kabuto, in this episode, I saw the arrival of Punch Hopper, an army of singing Worms, and Tendou spoiling Sasword’s battle… by getting his Zecter. This is the second time I watch the show in English, the first was on the internet, thanks to Sandiess’ Mutiply Site. This the first time I find Kagami’s voice not that whiny. Tendou’s VA did a good job dubbing him. His dub is like a mix of “jerk-ness”, arrogance and heroism. The other dubs are fine. Since I skipped 27 episodes, I don’t know why Tendou has his own team and what happen to ZECT? Why is it missing in action? What happen to Drake… and TheBee? I think I better watch the previous eps for me to understand this.
Fast forward at 2pm, I went to the internet café and tried to watch Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. I watch the show’s first two episodes subbed by Order of Zeronos. It’s been a long time since I watched Super Sentai! The last time is back in ’98 when ABC-5 (Now known as TV5) and IBC-13 aired Jetman and Fiveman. While watching the series, now I understand why this show can’t be adapted by the Americans. This show is too Japanese! The show’s theme song is an LSS one like Jetman’s theme (This theme is still humming in my head in some instances). In my experience watching Super Sentai, this is the first time that I saw in the first episode the heroes didn't use the giant robot instead they use thier origamis to fight the giant monster! Sweet.
I decided to watch Kamen Rider Kabuto for the second time in my other cousin’s house. While watching it, my cousin commented, “The Riders are too thin.” Woah. This is the first time I noticed that. I know that the current Riders are girly men except for Hibiki (In which I replied to my cousin), but thin, this is the first time I heard that. During the commercial breaks, I asked him what year Kamen Rider Black aired here in the Philippines, he replied, “I didn’t start schooling that time, maybe 17 or 18 years ago.” Now I understand why I didn’t see this on TV back in the 90’s. LOL.
