Land of Hope. Canaan Anime Review.

Canaan was based on the scenario on the visual novel, 428: Fūsasareta Shibuya de. It was conceptualized by Type-Moon, best known for the Fate Series. The anime is about a certain virus called Ua which literally means flower (hence the shape of the mark found on the victims) and death and one of the survivors is Maria Ozawa, a photographer who befriends Canaan before the events prior in the anime. Also, this is about an organization named Snake/Hebi, led by Alphard, who was related to Canaan’s mentor, Siam.

The anime begins in China in which Maria Ozawa and Mino, her superior to cover the upcoming Anti-Terrorism Conference in the city. While in China, Maria was lost, because of her job taking various pictures she likes to take on the festival. While being lost, she saw zombie like beings wearing weird mask who died. Canaan, Maria’s friend appeared and chased the other zombie like creatures who are in the festival.

Meanwhile, Alphard, the leader of Snake/Hebi is being held by the CIA and is about to be detained when suddenly, helicopters came and rescue her.

As the series progressed, we learned the big importance of the Ua Virus and what are those zombie-like beings are. Also, we later learn the other victims of the said virus and what happened to them.

To the review, one thing I liked about Canaan is that they were able to put the entire gun totting action for 13 episodes! This is one of the shows, aside that the girls are eye candy (less Yun Yun but she’s cute) that the weapons you see are very well detailed. Another thing that I liked about Canaan is the fluid animation. The explosives, the gunfights, heck, even the Unbloom zombies’ deaths are too detailed! More about the fluid animation, the scenes related to Canaan’s synesthesia felt like you are looking into the eyes of our lead, Canaan.

The voice acting is brilliant and you feel the emotion in every character in the series. I was surprised that Rie Tanaka voiced Liang Qui! Best know for her role as Lacus Clyne from Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny.

The plot is very catchy, the character development was brilliant…, and it only lasted for 13 episodes! Screw that, Naruto and Bleach! Since Type-Moon conceptualized it, expect a lot of eye candy for us men (I think I already mentioned this). Back to the plot, one thing that I liked about the plot is the biological warfare bit and its effects to people once infected. Those who survive and earn abilities (except for Yun Yun) are called Borners while those who survive and did not earn abilities but mutate into zombie-like beings are called Unbloom. One thing that I liked about the plot is that it is realistic, if biological war really happened, there is a possibility that the victims will mutate.

As for the finale, the show’s finale is epic. It really ended with a bang. In addition, the where are they now part felt like I want more Canaan goodness. This show is recommended to ages 16 upwards because of its sexual implications.
