Ao no Exorcist 04-05 – Enter, Shiemi and Bon!

In this double episode review, we meet Shiemi, a chick who loves plants and is being infected by a demon and Bon, a guy who was living on a cursed temple and is extremely similar with Rin in almost everything less the brain. Yep, he also wants to kick Satan’s ass.

First impressions with Shiemi, she is one of those damsel of distress characters in shonen anime, in which they can fight but in most times, they are useless most of the time and mostly, has a crush on the smart guy and the dumb guy has a crush on her. As for her episode debut, it was good. Also, the fact that he was quite similar to Rin who can’t let go of his past a bit made this episode a Rin character development episode of sorts.

One more thing to note in the fourth episode, Yukio is more of demon compared to Rin. No seriously, he is more evil than Rin in terms of action! As for the overall episode, it was good and the fact that we saw Rin using his katana in an actual fight makes this episode quite fun to watch asides from Yukio’s actions in the fight.

Now to my favorite character introduction episode, Bon’s introduction, as I said earlier, he is the exactly like Rin except that he is smarter than him. They both want to defeat Satan and they both have a dark past, which deals with Satan. In Bon’s case, his father is the survivor of an incident in which Satan killed a lot of exorcist in which we had a glimpse upon in the first episode. Since the temple is still standing and a lot of weird incidents happened on the temple, it was declared as “cursed” by the townspeople.

Now to Bon, he is a strong character and the fact that he is the son who lives in the “cursed” temple, his motivation to restore the said temple caused me to like the guy’s attitude along with his rivalry with Rin. The episode also reveals that Mephisto Pheles is a demon and my hunch that he is a demon is right! Ha! And based on what is happening in that short scene, it seems that he can’t be that trusted. For the overall episode, asides from the birth of a new rivalry and Bon and Rin’s interactions, the additional background info about the events in the first episode kinda closes that story to those who are wondering on why those priests burned into blue flames.
