In this episode, Marvelous is irritated because Basco now has a way on getting a Grand Power ahead of them and thus, is forcing Navi to tell the next prophecy until Satoru Akashi aka BoukenRed makes his appearance and asked a bunch of space pirates to look for a Precious with him!
Before talking about the actual episode, firstly, the episode cemented the fact that the Gokaigers earned 11 Grand Powers during the events of the 199 Hero Great Battle movie and those who appeared in “spirit form” in the movie are quite aware about them passing a Grand Power on these pirates. To those who are not aware about the powers that were unlocked in the movie, they are: Goranger (Variblune), JAKQ, Denziman, Google-V, Dynaman, Bioman, Turboranger, Dairanger, Boukenger (DaiBouken’s Spirit Form), Go-Onger (Engine Machalon, which will appear on their tribute episode) and Goseiger (All Header Great Charge). Those enclosed inside the parenthesis are their respective Grand Powers, and so far, we know about four powers, one we saw in the movie (Goranger) and three which we saw or we will saw in the series, namely, Goseiger, Go-Onger (which we will see in the upcoming weeks) and Boukenger, which we will see in this episode. Now, let’s talk about the actual episode!
If there is one thing that bothered me in this episode is why Akashi bothered asking a bunch of space pirates to look for some Precious if he has his own crew of treasure hunters? But after watching the episode, it seems that he wants to “awaken” what was lost with Marvelous after the events of previous episode which I don’t need to explain what the hell happened in that episode. To those who are wondering what did Marvelous lost, that would be the spirit of adventure, the adrenalin in looking for a Grand Power in which he nor his crew knows where to look for it; that in which Marvelous does it for the sake of his dream and not for some competition with his former crewmate. If there is one thing that disappoints me is that, they didn’t do any proper build-up in this episode on Marvelous’ frustration regarding Basco’s new found power stealing abilities.
Another thing that I liked about this episode is Luka, yes, you all know that I have a crush for her but in this episode, we really saw her love for adventure and most especially what will they obtain at the end, a treasure. As for the rest of the gang, I love that Joe doesn’t care on what team they are using, all he knows that its all the same for him. In this episode’s case, Gai transformed into Shurikenger, an ally of the Hurricanegers, a group of ninjas while the rest transformed into the Kakurangers, another group of ninjas about eight years older than the Hurricanegers and uses a lot of classy Adam West Batman special effects. And yes, they still use those effects and now has updates in terms of graphics! The “shu shu shu shu” sound effect looks sharper compared to the original effect years ago.
As for the return of Satoru Akashi in this episode, to be honest, I haven’t watched any Boukenger but I was impressed on his appearance in this episode. What’s more is that he clearly acted like a mentor figure towards Marvelous and Luka during the episode. What’s more is that even out of suit, he never fails to impress me. I mean, he was able to enter the Gokai Galleon and most of the time it’s docked in the sky for Pete’s sake! That takes a lot of guts just to climb on that airship without your superpowers! Also, as for the Boukenger-related mecha, which is basically the spirit of the DaiBouken and later, for its finisher, its sword the GoGoKen, I am fine with it since first, Boukenger is an anniversary series and it deserves something big that is related to its series. Take for instance in Gaoranger’s case, the actual GaoLion and as for Carranger’s case… that is the pose and the Gokai Radical Racing Slash move. Note, both shows are anniversary shows, guess I should expect something big from the previous anniversary seasons.
Overall, for the first tribute episode in which they have unlocked the Grand Power from the movie, it was good and set the standard for the later episodes which involves this case, namely the expected Go-Onger tribute and the other episodes in which we haven’t seen the Grand Power yet.
