Supernatural the Animation 01 – The Alter Ego Review

One of the Winter 2011 titles that I am excited to watch since I am interested in Supernatural but don’t know where to find the DVD’s… and I don’t have a DVD player. Also, I don’t want to spend more than an hour just to marathon the first season, so yeah, I will just watch the 22-minute version. Anyways, in this episode the Winchesters face a shape-shifter and cause quite a problem with the brothers.

Unlike the first episodes of anime that I have watched, they never introduced why they are travelling in an old car and when did they start looking for their missing father and when did the start hunting for monsters. Since this is adapted from the original American script, screw not introducing the Winchester brothers and let’s get into the action!

As for the action in this episode, it was awesome. What’s more is that the art adds up to the realism of the scenes and makes the characters of this series more human, and thus, I salute the character designer for making the designs look like they are humans. Asides from the art, the lighting that reminded me of the similar lighting style with Madhouse’s smash anime hit, Death Note adds the darkness and the intensity in some of the scenes.

For the plot of the episode, even if it only give hints about the Winchester’s past such as Dean hinting monsters with his dad while Sam is in college and that their dad left a notebook and that’s it. Hopefully, they will talk more about it and explain Sam’s dream early in this episode. As for the monster of the week (I am dead serious), it was fun.

Having a shape-shifter as the monster for the first episode was a good choice since they were able to flesh out more of the personality of the Winchesters and their respective senses, thus causing not to trust each other at some point in the episode that gives us a lot of intense scenes involving them. Will not tell you which scene is it since it is awesome that you need to watch it yourself.

First impressions on the Winchesters, Dean is the happy go lucky guy who loves chicks and in this episode, he hits with the female Detective. I like Dean. As for Sam, he was the serious type and that’s it. Will have a hard time liking Sam but considering what he did in this episode, he is badass!

Overall, it never actually felt the show’s first episode but even with that, they introduced why they are travelling across America and it happened that they got interested to a case in an area in America and showed us how they work. It seems that I am seeing a pattern here, which might cause fans to assume that this will be an episodic series, ala the Iron Man anime.

Hopefully it might not end up with the Iron Man anime route at the near end of the series. Even if that is the case, it had a great start the action is good and that the animation has a realistic feel that adds to the darkness and intensity of this series. I like it.

Jared Padalecki and Jensen Acles Reprises Their Roles on Supernatural the Animation!

Warner Brothers Japan revealed via Twitter that the original actors of the popular live-action series, Supernatural namely, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles will reprise their respective roles on the anime version of the first season!

Jared Padalecki will dub all 22 episodes of the said anime while his co-star, Jensen Ackles will only dub the last two episodes of the said anime which is disappointing considering that he did dubbing for video games such as, Tron Legacy and The Third Birthday and the animated Batman film, Batman: Under the Red Hood. The two respective portrayed the Winchester brothers, Sam and Dean.

According to the official website for the anime, the DVD and BluRay Disc releases of the anime will launch in Japan on February 23 with Japanese/English soundtracks and Japanese/English subtitles. As of now, the official Us release date has not yet been set but it is expected that a DVD of the entire series will be released.

Gackt Guest Stars on Supernatural Anime

Eiga reports that Gackt will voice a guest role in Supernatural the Animation, the anime adaptation of the popular American TV show, Supernatural!

Gackt will play Andy, a character who appeared early in the live-action series. Like Sam Winchester, Andy received special powers from a demon as one of the chosen Special Children. Andy will be a crucial character in the The Chosen Ones Part I (Erabareshimono-tachi Zenpen), which is the last episode of the first anime season.

This isn't the first time Gackt is involved in doing voice over work in anime. He voiced roles in Tono to Issho, Shiki, and New Fist of the North Star. He also narrated last year's commercials for the Berserk anime project.

Accordingly, Gackt watches many overseas live-action television series, with Supernatural as his favorites. He will make a guest appearance at the world premiere of the anime version on February 3. Warner Home Video will launch the anime on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan with a starter disc on February 23, followed by two boxes on March 9 and April 6.

More Supernatural the Animation News!

This time, we have the official artwork!

Supernatural Wiki said, "At the Rising Con Spain 2010, Jensen and Jared confirmed the project and that they'd seen and approved the artwork for Sam and Dean. They also said they would voice the first couple of English language episodes."

Now Supernatural fans, you don't need to worry if they don't sound like them! About the artwork, it reminded me one episode that I watched in which Dean exclaimed this, "Do I look adorable?" Supernatural fan girls, what do you think?

Thanks Magnum for the info!

UPDATE: MADHOUSE Studios will be in-charge in the animation for the upcoming Supernatural anime. No wonder the promotional picture looks good. MADHOUSE Studios is best known for Death Note and the upcoming Marvel Anime: Iron Man and Marvel Anime: Wolverine.

Animeanime.jp's website reports that the anime will be a 22-episode one that will cover up the storyline of seasons one and two. Warner Home Video will release this anime on Blu-ray and DVD in Japan on January 12, 2011.

The anime project will not only remake the best episodes from the live-action version, but also depict original episodes not seen in the live-action version. Those original episodes will include prologues of the Winchester brothers' childhood, anime-only enemies, and episodes featuring secondary characters from the live-action version.

Supernatural creator Eric Kripke is credited as the anime project's creator, and MADHOUSE co-founder Masao Maruyama is serving as executive producer. Naoya Takayama (Night Head, Liar Game) is supervising the series' scripts, and Takahiro Yoshimatsu (Trigun) is designing the characters.

I am not a fan of the original series but I have watched some episodes of the show and I enjoyed it. Once I find the anime really good, maybe I will give the original series a shot.
