Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger 02 – Heroes and Kids

Derp Face.

In this episode of Gokaiger, they had a quick lesson about Super Sentai, had a kid stole Marvelous’ ShinkenRed Key, saw Aka Red and he is responsible for all of this, and what’s more, GokaiOh made his first decent appearance! By decent, we saw how all five Gokai Machines turning into this mecha (DX GokaiOh is now available in your nearest toy stores if you are living in Japan, if not, order it in some guy in Japan! NOW!)! To top it all off, Kai made his official appearance, and lo, he is not that high school kid back then!

In case you are wondering why I decided to create my own title and not use the episode’s title, “This Planet’s Value,” that is because this is what this episode is all about, about heroes and kids. Heroes because we saw how the young Marvelous ended up being GokaiRed, and it is all thanks to Aka Red (translated as Red Red). Now it makes perfect sense why they can transform into any Super Sentai warrior! Asides from that, this is when the Gokaigers are slowly being looked up by others as heroes and not just a bunch of space pirates who came to Earth for the sake of getting its treasure. Also, Marvelous is starting to become an influential Red Ranger to others.

Now to expand my three points, first with Aka Red, asides that he is the first guy to carry the Gokai Sabre, we never had a glimpse on how he looked like but since he had the anniversary logo in his chest (now 35!), this is Aka Red alright. For Aka Red’s TV debut, it was awesome. To be honest, I haven’t watched Boukenger vs. Super Sentai, but I was in awe when he started acting like a badass for a guy who never had his own human appearance! As for Marvelous’ in the flash back, it kinda reminded me of Red-Haired Shanks giving the straw hat to Luffy when he sacrificed his arm to save Luffy from an attack. This is also the case with Marvelous and Aka Red, he gave the treasure chest filled with Ranger Keys to Marvelous and sends him his words of encouragement to live. I like it.

For the two other points, it is all thanks to that kid. He started to see these guys as the new Super Sentai team who will defeat the Zanyack threat but no, Marvelous just visited this rocky planet for the sake of the greatest treasure found in this planet (thanks for the tip, Aka Red!). As for Marvelous being an influential red, he letting the kid use his Mobirates for the kid to learn the lesson of protecting this precious planet in his own way.

Also, this episode also revealed the possible date of the Legendary War thanks to what the kid said. Based on what he said, it happened either a year or at least 3 years before Gokaiger took place considering that it is still fresh from his head the events that happened during the war, especially his grandpa died to save him from the Zanyack.

If there are two characters that stand out in this episode, they are Marvelous and Ahim. Marvelous here, like I said earlier became an influential Red Ranger to the kid whom he was reminded of himself. This is when we saw more of his brash attitude and why he is marvelous. As for Ahim, this is when I see her more than just a prim and proper lady, but more of the conscience of any member of the Pirate Squadron. I now like her character. As for the other three, my admiration for Luka has been sealed.

As for the monster of the week, Davey Jones, I mean, Bongarn, he just likes to shoot stuff, so meh. As for the GokaiOh’s second fight and its first gattai, I was in awe. It reminded me on Megaranger’s Galaxy Mega (or Astro Megazord for PRiS fans), was formed except that it takes five small mechas with a moon landing in it. As for its second fight, it was amazing. Asides from that, its finisher which involves a breast cannon (!) and standard pirate cannonballs, it is too pirate-y and I liked it!

If there are any disappointments in this episode, still the same with the previous episode, they don’t have their own identifiable fighting style when they decide to turn into a different Ranger team. The only time I saw their own specific fighting styles as a different Ranger is when they turned into the previous Reds in which we saw Doc as GoseiRed as Doc who just transformed into GoseiRed. Same goes with the others.

Overall, this is one good episode. Asides that it sheds some light regarding on why all Ranger Keys in a treasure chest and why they have the ability to turn into any Ranger, and it is all thanks to Aka Red. Asides from that, this episode adds more background about the Legendary War but never sheds much proper light on what year or specific date this war happened.

As for the fights, still as good as the previous episode and the second Final Wave sequence is way better the first one, which I find too plain. As for the kid in this episode, I love the fact that they put an indirect reference to Magiranger since the kid’s school uniform kinda looked like Kai’s old school uniform before he decided to wear his Magiranger outfit, plus, Kai is also wearing the same black cloak from before! And so, in the next episode, Kai Ozu returns and it seems that he will be teaching Doc, courage! (Laughs in a corner)
