Japanese Mayor and Governor Seen Cosplaying at World Cosplay Summit 2011

In celebration of the World Cosplay Summit 2011 being held in Nagoya City, Aichi this week, Mayor Takashi Kawamura and Aichi Prefectural Governor Hideaki Ohmura cosplayed as Dragon Ball's Piccolo and Space Battleship Yamato's Lord Dessler, both villains in their respective series.

WCS held a red carpet parade through Nagoya's shopping area on Saturday morning. Just as he did last year, Mayor Kawamura opened the parade while cosplaying as the legendary Japanese lord Tokugawa Muneharu. However, Kawamura had cosplayed as Piccolo the day before. Governor Ohmura appeared at the parade as Lord Dessler from the Space Battleship Yamato. Both villains that they cosplayed later became honorable characters in their respective shows.

Other participants in the parade includes: Nagoya's SKE48 and the main voice cast of the Detective Opera Milky Holmes, cosplaying as their respective characters. WCS will continue on Sunday with the Osu Cosplay Parade and the WCS championship competition with voice actor Tohru Furuya, musical group JAM Project, Bushiroad's Takaaki Kidani, cosplayer Tatsumi Inui, and Tokai Walker magazine editor Masaaki Nagase as judges. 17 countries this year took part on the WCS.

Man Claims that a Super Saiyan Ordered Him to Stab Someone, Sentenced!

The Tokyo District Court sentenced a suspect who had claimed that a Super Saiyan from Dragon Ball Z told him to stab another man with a kitchen knife with a three-year prison sentence, suspended for five years for attempted murder.

Presiding Judge Masato Itō certified that the suspect, a 38-year-old unemployed man named Mitsuru Imai, had diminished mental capacity that is why he gave the said prison sentence.

Imai claimed that he stabbed the victim because he was told "Kill with a kitchen knife" and "That man" by a Super Saiyan. Therefore, the defense asserted that Imai had diminished responsibility at the time of the crime as a mitigating factor. While Judge Itō ruled that Imai had diminished mental capacity, he also ruled that it was not enough to declare Imai not guilty by reason of insanity.

The judge explained that he gave Imai a five-year suspension because he hoped that Imai would continue to receive treatment, as the defendant had very little presence of mind to avoid committing the crime.

According to the case, Imai was on the street in a shopping area of Tokyo's Taitō ward on February 8, 2010. Imai thought he was being harassed by an unfamiliar man who had been drinking since morning, and then Imai bought a knife from a nearby convenience store. Imai actually stabbed another man who resembled the man he thought was harassing him. The victim, who was 57 years old at the time, received serious stab wounds in the abdomen that took five months to heal.

The prosecution had asked for a five-year prison sentence without suspension. If Imai is not convicted of another crime in the next five years, he will not have to serve the prison sentence.

Akira Toriyama Raises Funds for Earthquake and Tsunami Victims via YouTube

Recently, Shueisha directed visitors from its website and Shonen Jump's website to a YouTube video message from Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump creator Akira Toriyama. Shueisha will donate all advertising revenue from people watching the video to victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Shueisha later posted an English version of Toriyama's message. All the English comments made by viewers on that video will be translated into Japanese for victims of the disaster. Toriyama had previously drawn an illustrated message of support for the victims.

Son Goku, Arale and Gundam Cheers Up Japan

Last time, I have posted artworks created by Inoue Takehiko and Noizi Ito in which they use it to show their support to the victims of the March 11 earthquake.

Asides from that, Akira Toriyama, best known for his works Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump and Okawara Kunio who makes mecha designs for the Gundam franchise posted art to cheer up Japan in this disaster!

Toriyama drew two of his famous characters Son Goku of Dragon Ball and Arale-chan of Dr. Slump, riding the Kinto'un Cloud (Flying Nimbus in some dubs), shouting the word "Ganbare!!", which translates roughly to "Do your best!!"

This art was posted on the official Shonen Jump website along with it are messages coming from the editors for the victims and families. He then wrote a message for earthquake victims next to the art: "To everyone affected in the disaster, it is really very difficult, but please don’t give up and do your best!"

Okawara Kunio tweeted this image of the classic RX78-2 Gundam (for the uninitiated, this is the original Gundam back in the franchise's main universe, the Universal Century) holding a Japanese flag with the words, "Ganbare Nippon!" which is translated as, "Do your best, Japan!" written underneath.

Okawa also included the comment, "Today, I am wishing well to the victims of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear explosions. Thank you to the people who are involved with the relief, and the people in the Japan Self-Defense Corps. Do your best, Japan. Do your best, Japan."

Seeing more of the original artist drawing artworks of the their famous characters to encourage Japan is a really touching sight to see. Hopefully, we will see more of it in the coming days.

Korean Dragon Ball Film, Now Online!

Before there was Dragonball: Evolution, Korea made a live-action adaptation of Akira Toriyama's popular manga, Dragon Ball back in the 1990's! Simply called, Dragon Ball (드래곤볼) and also known as Ssawora Son Goku, Igyeora Son Goku (Trans. Fight Son Goku, Win Son Goku), has just been recently uploaded in YouTube!

To those who are wondering if it is as close as the original source, yes it is, closer than a certain abomination known as Dragonball: Evolution... with some minor changes of course. The prominent change in this Korean DB flick is that Nappa made his appearance and he never appeared in Emperor Pilaf's Arc which the film was based upon!

Anyways, here is the first part of the entire film. The uploader divided the film into 11 parts. I place the other 10 parts at the bottom of the part 1 video. In case you are wondering if it is subbed, nope, it isn't.

Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9 | Part 10 | Part 11

So, what can you say about this film? To those who are wondering if there are other Dragon Ball film adaptations asides from this one, China also made one called, Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins. I am not sure if this one is uploaded on YouTube, but if it is, I might as well post it.

Special thanks to Josh of HJU for the tip!

Dragon Ball Kai Premieres on GMA!

The updated version of the classic anime, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Kai will finally make its way in the Philippines via GMA! According to the ad, it will premiere on March 7, replacing Love ni Mister, Love ni Misis on the 9:30 am timeslot. For those who are affected by GMA's Regional TV, it is not sure if it will be available in those areas.

To those who don't know, Dragon Ball Kai is the reversion of the classic Dragon Ball Z anime which celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the said franchise. In this version, it eliminates all unnecessary filler and now on widescreen HD resolution. In short, it is still Dragon Ball Z, with less fillers, less talk and straight to the action. Currently, the anime is still on-going in Japan, episode 95 airing at March 6th, which is the end of the Cell Saga. It is said that it will end till the Cell Saga.

It is not sure if the original cast of Dragon Ball Z will reprise their respective roles for Dragon Ball Kai considering that QTV once aired the redub version of the original Dragon Ball anime with Jefferson Utanes reprising his role as Son Goku... and he will reprise his role as Son Goku again for DB Kai same goes for Picollo's VA, based on the latest advetisement! Also, it is confirmed in the ad that they 4:3 stretch-o-vision format will be utilized instead of using the widescreen black bars.

Dragon Ball 01 – Bulma and Son Goku Review

Before everyone was pissed with Dragonball Evolution (what evolved anyway?), before Goku learned that he was an alien and learned the ability to turn himself blonde with blue eyes, before Vegeta broke his scouter and screamed its over 9000 (No! 8000! 8000!). And most especially, before Goku figured out how to create Goten and Gohan, he was a young boy who thinks that cars are monsters, that chicks have wieners (you know the one) and he is just some strong kid with a tail! Yep, this is yet another retro ONEShots review, and this time we have the very first episode of Dragon Ball!

If you read the original manga (volume 1, chapter 1), you will noticed a lot of extended scenes, such as extending Goku’s daily life and introducing Pilaf and his trope at the second half of the episode and made the introduction about the Dragon Balls more mystical which I like.

As for the first episode, they introduced as two things. First is Son Goku, a kid living outside civilization for a long time and ends up meeting a girl coming from civilization named Bulma. Second, she is looking for mystical orbs called Dragon Ball and she must collect all seven Dragon Balls to summon a mystical dragon named Shen Long (or Shenron, whichever) who can grant any wish, except he only grants a single wish!

Since Goku has nothing to do, he decides to tag along with Bulma. First impression on Goku, he is one simple kid and I liked it! His innocence runs the first episode, heck, because of this innocence that he doesn’t fear an attacking tiger or a pterodactyl abducting Bulma for his dinner! As for his fighting skills, even if he looks stupid, he is secretly smart. I mean, he used the speed of Bulma’s motorcycle and use it as momentum for him to chase the pterodactyl in midair and hit it with his nyoibo!

For Bulma, she is secretly a pervert. Gee, no wonder she got pregnant with Vegeta’s son, Trunks considering that Vegeta is not interested in Bulma! Anyways, back to pre-DBZ Bulma, she is in search for the Dragon Balls with the help of a special radar that she invented, which gives us an idea of her being smart and an inventor.

As for Pilaf and co. I find them not quite a threat. Look at Pilaf, he thought that after he get a single Dragon Ball and say the chant, the dragon will appear! I mean, if that is the case, then at least most of us will have their wishes granted in the DB Universe! Skip and let us wait for them to make a full appearance with them fooling Goku!

Overall, it is one fun episode. This series gives us a hint that this is Goku and Bulma’s adventure in looking for the other Dragon Balls. Watching in this episode, it made me realize how much it evolved throughout the years and that alone, you will see how much this show influenced the modern shonen anime/manga titles by having an idiot hero and a little ecchi on the side!

Cross Epoch Manga Review

With Cross Epoch being released in the US via the 100th issue of Shonen Jump, I guess it is time for me to review the only crossover between Dragon Ball and One Piece. Unlike any other crossover, it has its own story and a different take on the characters and does not involve epic battles but about friends gathered by the mystical dragon, Shenron.

Cross Epoch is a collaboration between Dragon Ball’s Akira Toriyama and One Piece’s Eiichiro Oda who just met, learned that they are fans of each others manga and decided to do a one-shot story about Dragon Ball and One Piece characters meeting.

The story begins with all the Dragon Ball and One Piece characters in a group. Krillin is with Chopper and they are driving a train, Bulma is with Nami and they are robbers… SPACE robbers! While Master Roshi and Sanji, the sheriffs learning about the robbery, and the fact that the robbers are chicks, and obviously, these perverts will chase them!

Vegeta, Trunks, Robin and Usopp are pirates, while Piccolo and Zoro are lost and plans to steal the train that Krillin and Chopper are driving, and ends up being passengers on the said train! Finally, Goku and Luffy are heading to somewhere, like the other characters before them!

Blocking them is Tettiri no.55, a papier-mâché air ship owned by the weakest villains from Dragon Ball and One Piece, Pilaf and Buggy the Clown! With them blocking their way, can Goku and friends go to that place that they want to go? That is for you to find out.

On to the review, if you read the one-shot for the first time, you will find it senseless, I am dead serious. Why, it is because the aim of the story is really weird, it doesn’t involve something serious but something fun, something illogical that you might end up thinking about Alice in Wonderland and what the heck is the story all about!

Unlike most crossovers, that I know that involves two very diverse series meeting for each other, what Toriyama and Oda did is that they created a separate universe and let their characters meet and like they know each other for a long time. This is good because it is a 19-page one-shot and they need to give us a story that would fit with the allotted number of pages!

What makes it a plus because it removes the awkwardness of the characters meeting for the first time and goes straight to the point on how they will interact with each other. And it is fun to see two perverts talking about chasing chicks instead of going for trouble and seeing Luffy riding Kintoun, which proves that even if he is a pirate in a different world, he has a pure heart!

Shenron, chillin'

As for the plot, to sum the entire one-shot, it is about all of our characters having a tea party with Shenron! See how senseless it was? But at some point, it makes sense. What Tori and Oda did here is that they abused one plot point from Dragon Ball. What happens to the Dragon Balls that needs to rest for a year? In this universe, Shenron is having a tea party with his friends! It was weird seeing Shenron holding a teacup while waiting for Goku and Luffy to arrive. But hey, at least Shenron is enjoying himself and does not have plans to stop granting wishes!

Vegeta as... Vegeta w/ horns!

As for the characters, I love that they retained most of their personalities and their costumes for this series! My only disappointed is that they introduced many characters and never had time to play with all of them within 19 pages.

Overall, Crosh Epoch is one senseless yet fun read. It is senseless because it is about their adventure of having tea with the mystical dragon and fun because it is senseless! The entire chapter reminisce the adventure feel of the original Dragon Ball manga, one of the aspect that I liked about this chapter asides how they are grouped with characters that are similar to them (i.e. Nami with Bulma, Goku with Luffy, etc.) and how they interact with each other (points at Roshi and Sanji). If you want some clean and senseless fun, better read this one-shot then! We will not know if Toriyama and Oda will do a collaboration after this one or if Toei has plans to do a Dragon Ball x One Piece movie in the future!

Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! OVA Review

Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! is the second Dragon Ball Z OVA and the latest Dragon Ball related animation in a decade (This OVA was released on September 21, 2008, a year before the release of Dragon Ball Kai).

Written by Akira Toriyama and screenplay by Takao Koyama, it talks about the events between Z and GT, a little battle happened two years after the Kid Buu Saga.

Goku’s family is living a quite life with Mr. Satan (or Hercule or what your dub likes to call him) supporting Goku’s family financially and them planting radishes (He, he). Videl invites Goku and co. to the grand opening of Mr. Satan’s Hotel, which was created to commemorate the defeat of Majin Buu in the hands of Mr. Satan. Because of food, Goku decides to go to the opening and on that day, a new enemy appears.

Vegeta’s younger brother, Tarble (probably a pun for table, you know, vegetable) and her cute wife Gure came to earth to ask Vegeta’s help to defeat Abo and Kado (another pun!) who followed them. These two are remnants of Frieza’s army and accordingly, as strong as Frieza. Will the Z Fighters defeat this new threat? That is for you to find out.

On to the review, this my friends, is what you call a good Dragon Ball OVA, a good Dragon Ball OVA. Why is it good? Because all the existing Z Fighters were given ample screen time, to highlight it, Trunks and Goten had most fights compared to the veteran Z Fighters. Plus, Yamcha’s Fist of the Wolf Fang is used by Gotenks along with Tienshinhan’s Volleyball Play! Even with the strong points, Goku as always, likes to hog the last scene. Oh well, this is Goku we are talking about!

One of the things that I loved about this film is the cameo appearance of most characters coming from the franchise starting from the not well-known characters such as Lunch (poor Lunch) and the well-known ones, like Goku and his family. My only disappointed is that even if Tienshinhan’s move appeared, he never actually made an appearance. At least the reason why he is MIA is reasonable.

In terms of plot, the plot is worth watching for hardcore DB fans. If you are just a regular anime viewer, you will find this plot as an average DB filler episode with or without Toriyama’s involvement. As for the new characters, Tarble, Gure, Abo and Kado, they feel too generic. Tarble is the generic younger brother who looks up to his older brother, Vegeta. To put is simply, he is Vegeta’s Mokuba. Gure doesn’t do a lot in this film while Abo and Kado… they are generic villains that were created for the sake of a certain video game to have a lot of fighters for its roster.

As for the older characters, most of them are the same less Vegeta. It seems that in this OVA, he “lightened up” a bit. How light? He likes having friendly matches with Goku (Whether sparring or in eating contest), he doesn’t act like a dick to much and most especially, he respect people! Seriously, he bowed when her sister-in-law bowed when she introduced herself!

Even if the new characters felt generic, the animation is something worth praising. Asides from the trademarked moves, the characters looked much cleaner in this OVA and the fights looked crisp in widescreen. Also, one of the things that is worth praising in terms of the animation is how they gave the Super Saiyan hair more glow! They gave the form a strong impact… that is also disappointing in some points because they retained the glow for long periods, making it a distraction in terms of viewing. Also, another thing that disappoints me with the animation is some inconsistencies with some character designs. In one scene, Yamcha has the turtle logo in his dogi and in another, he doesn’t have it! In addition, there are points in the film that the background went a little “cartoony.”

Aka, the fusion between Abo and Kado

As for the fights, considering that it was mentioned that the power level of Abo and Kado are at the same level with Frieza, it means and that Trunks and Goten are fighting them not in Super Saiyan form, it means that the two had a chance to defeat Frieza if they time travelled to the past! Put that aside, the fight is like an average DBZ fight, except that the animation for the fight is crispier. Unlike most fights we saw in DBZ which last for more than 2 episodes (add 1 or 2 more episodes if it involves a lot of talking), the fight lasted for only a few minutes.

Heck, the entire crew was just relaxed when they are seeing the fight! Seriously, they are just watching the fight like the two are just sparring some random guy! In addition, while watching it, they are eating sandwiches and drinking tea… with Oolong and Puar, both in maid outfits serving!

Overall, the OVA is fun to watch. If you are a long time Dragon Ball and you missed the show this much without watching DB Kai, this OVA is worth taking a good look. Asides from the revamped opening sequence (In which you can safely conclude that Cha La Head Cha La is the official Dragon Ball theme song) which will make you go nostalgic along with the show’s trademark fights, you will really love this OVA. The animation and the crisp artwork is just a bonus along with the cameos.

If you were a regular anime viewer, like I said earlier, you would find it as a filler DB episode that has more Trunks and Goten, less Goku and Vegeta and Abo and Kado are just forgettable villains, same goes with the roster of villains found in Dragon Ball GT. But hey, it is worth a look.

Dragon Ball Volume 1 Manga Review

Since I have the Dragon Ball VIZBIG Edition Volume 1 of the said title in which, a volume is composed of three volumes of the original title, I will review the first volume of all the three volumes of the big volume.

Dragon Ball is a manga written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama and in this first volume; this is when we saw how Goku’s adventure began… by tagging along with Bulma! Aside from that, if you never had the chance to watch the original series due to Z becoming extremely popular, here’s what I can tell to you, the characters that you thought are useless has some use!

The volume begins with Kid Goku, wearing his blue karate gi (If you are reading the same edition that I read, its blue. But if you read the original release which is in black and white, your lost!), living in the middle of nowhere and he was able to survive it after all. Aside that he was able to survive the wilderness, he hunts and do things what I a guy will do if he is in a forest.

Enter Bulma, a teenager who is looking for something and bumps into Goku who has just caught a fish and thinks of her car as a monster! After clearing things up, Goku welcomes Bulma in his house since that is what his dead grandpa tells him. Treat women nicely. And so, we saw the first Dragon Ball in this series, the four-star Dragon Ball.

We learned that there are more Dragon Balls in existence and we learned that once you complete all seven Dragon Balls, and once you do the proper chant, you can summon a mystical dragon named, Shenlong (That’s what my volume says, deal with it.) which can grant any wish that the person likes!

Since Goku doesn’t want to give his grandpa’s Dragon Ball, Bulma then convinces Goku to join in her quest to look for the Dragon Balls, and since Goku has nothing to do, he decides to tag along! And so, Goku’s adventure begins… along with Bulma.

As the volume progressed, we met Kame Sen’nin, translated as Turtle Hermit thanks to the sea turtle that was eternally lost in the forest. Because he helped him find his friend, he decides to give him a gift, originally, immortality but since the “immortal” phoenix died because of a tainted birdseed (I am serious), he decides to give Goku the next good thing… KINTOOOOOOO’UN! Ah, I miss screaming this one! Yep, if you are not familiar with it, I think Flying Nimbus is the term. And so, the Turtle Hermit gives Goku a cloud. Deal with the logic.

Aside from that, he has a Dragon Ball and after Bulma showing off her… assets (You need to read it if you want to know those assets), we now have the fourth Dragon Ball the grouped possessed.

Later, we met Oolong, a shape shifter who is terrorizing a town and this is when we saw the debut of Goku’s infamous “pat-pat” scenes for him to know if a person is a girl or not! Since the town has a Dragon Ball, Bulma decides to do a bargain; they will fix the problem with Oolong, if they will give the Dragon Ball.

Later, after they defeat Oolong and add him in their party (Plays FF’s Victory Fanfare), Bulma and co. is planning to go Fry-Pan Mountain to find the next Dragon Ball. This is when we learned about Gyuu-Mao aka The Ox King. Based on Oolong’s reaction, he is one dangerous guy.

After losing their capsules in the river, they all end up walking towards Fry-Pan Mountain and meets Yamcha and Pu’ar. Yamcha is a desert bandit and his partner is Pu’ar, the two of them are planning to rob Bulma and co. with their capsules and so, one of the first recorded awesome fights has been recorded… and we learn that he is afraid of girls… and I thought he is a pimp!

After the duo learns about the Dragon Balls, Yamcha now has a new mission, to steal the Dragon Balls and wish for the mystical dragon to remove his fear of girls. Cheesy, yes. Required? Absolutely! I mean, Yamcha dreams of getting married, so he must first get rid of that fear first!

Anyways, after their third encounter with Yamcha, and after he lost, he decides to give him the party a car with a tracker in it so that, he can follow them wherever they will go and steal their Dragon Balls if he has a chance! The party now continues with their quest in Fry-Pan Mountain in which we met Chi-Chi, who is secretly part of the Ultra Family due to her ability to shoot lasers and to throw boomerangs in her helmet. After that, Bulma and co. now looks for the Dragon Ball in the burning castle, and met Gyuu-Mao personally and apparently, he knows Kame Sen’nin, which he refers as his Muten Roshi in English, Invisible Master! Therefore, this is how the first volume of Dragon Ball ended.

On to the review, I will quote to one of the most clichéd sentences around, “this were it all began.” In this volume, we saw the first adventure of a naïve boy whom we have never thought that at the end, he will later save the world. From the following: a terrorist organization, green “demon,” aliens with monkey tails, another alien, a monster based on various aliens and a fat pink guy who will undergo major diet and will later shrunk into a dumb pink kid.

One of the driving forces in the first volume is Goku being extremely innocent. It is one of the driving forces of the comedy that this manga offers aside from the amount of Bulma fan service that we are getting in here. How innocent was Goku back then? Aside that he had a hard time identifying if that person is a guy or not, and after the incident that he learned that Bulma has no “balls” (You know the one), we saw the development of Goku’s technique in learning a person’s gender, the so-called, “pat-pat.”

You might say that Goku is stupid because of that, but here is his situation, according to Goku, his grandpa is crazy, add the fact that Goku is in the middle of nowhere, it is obvious that he will have a hard time learning the difference between a guy and a girl! Now you know why I love Goku back then! He is simple; all he cares is that as long as he can eat and beat the crap out of someone (Which is still remains up until now) he is happy.

Here is one thing I observed in this volume, the quest for the Dragon Balls was fast. By fast, it felt like, after every arc, Bulma and co. will earn a Dragon Ball. But that all changed when Yamcha appeared. In his introductory arc, the group never received a Dragon Ball, we only encountered a bandit that knows a martial arts technique called, Fist of the Wolf Fang and robs people and that includes Bulma and co. In the consecutive chapters after his introductory arc, Bulma and co. still doesn’t receive a Dragon Ball, which is good since it lessens the predictability of their adventure.

On to Yamcha, he left quite a good impression on me. In the first volume, he is the first decent antagonist that Goku faced aside that he is human; he was able to go on par with Goku in terms of fighting! Heck, it even caused Goku to lose more of his energy while fighting him! Add the fact that he never ate for a while! Their first fight was a real good read that I read it again. Too bad, he is afraid of girls.

My first impression on Bulma… she is a geek with quite a dirty mind. She is spoiled, had a hard time to live in the wilderness, and lastly, desperate for a perfect boyfriend that is why she is looking for the Dragon Balls, to wish for a perfect boyfriend! I find it absurd when I first read it but as soon as I read the volume, well, her wish has a point. I mean, she is Miss Perfect as seen on her actions in the volume, so all she needs is a guy who can add up to her “perfectness.”

First impression on Kame Sen’nin, he is a classic dirty old man with an awesome secret as revealed by one of his students, the Ox King. Aside that it was revealed that he “might” be immortal due to his immortal phoenix, seeing how terrifying the Ox King is, it is obvious that he is a strong master and like most old men in kung fu films, you should not under estimate him… and I was right after reading the following volumes.

As for the other characters that would be regulars, nah. They never left a good impression on me aside that Oolong is just a perverted pig, Chi-Chi has an Ultraman helmet in which up until now, and still confused on why she didn’t give it to her son, Gohan and Puar is just… Puar!

Overall, Volume 1 of Dragon Ball was a good start of Goku’s adventure. Sure, the first volume doesn’t give much focus on Goku as a main character aside that he only aides Bulma in her quest to look for the Dragon Balls just for the heck of it, but it gives us the meat on the stars of the original series, namely, Goku, Bulma, Kame Sen’nin and Yamcha.

The art for the first volume is great and the colors (If you are reading the Viz Big Edition), properly matches the characters. The only downside with Toriyama’s coloring is the fact that he went a little lazy after a few pages and decides to color the manga with the shades of red, orange and gray before going all black and white.

The edits made by Viz in terms of the sound cards is well done and in the Viz Big Edition, how they did the edits on Bulma’s service scenes was properly made (Note: The scans that I used here are the earlier releases of Dragon Ball in the US) for the new readers not to notice it.

If you are a fan of Dragon Ball Z and never had the chance to watch the original Dragon Ball series back in TV, the first volume is a must read. Aside that you learn why those characters in Z exist even if they don’t do a lot, you will learn that without those characters, Goku will not be the Goku we know and love. Thank God, Bulma found Goku in the wild and Goku wreck her car in return! That my friends, is how the relationship of a 14 (?) year-old with a monkey tail named Goku to a 16-year-old 36-C cup girl named, Bloomers, I mean, Bulma!

If you love this review, please support the official releases by Viz Media! You can buy your own copy of Dragon Ball Vol. 1 online (Which I post the links below), or if it is available in your local bookstore, buy it! The scans here are used for promotional purposes of the manga and for the sake of this review to be not boring because it is long. So please, Viz, don’t kill me.
