2 K-ON! Fans Stole Goods from K-ON! Model School

Police in Wakayama Prefecture arrested an unemployed 18-year-old male from Shirahama Town and a 17-year-old male from Tanabe City on Friday afternoon for allegedly stealing guitars and character figures from the real-life model for the K-ON! anime's school.

According to the police investigation, the two suspects broke into the display area in the former campus of Toyosato Elementary School in Shiga Prefecture on November 17 at around 1:30 a.m. The suspects allegedly stole about 20 character figures, three guitars similar to those seen in the anime, and two cash boxes with several hundred thousand yen (about several thousand U.S. dollars).

Police in Tanabe arrested the 18-year-old suspect in December for allegedly stealing cash from local supermarkets, offices, and other places. During a search of the older suspect's home, the police discovered figures and other items. According to the police, the suspects said that they liked K-ON! so they wanted the figures. The police believe the two are associates of a group that repeatedly broke into offices in their prefecture.

Pfft. Fanboys, willing to risk everything just for the sake of their fanboyism. Seriously, they should act like those who visited the model school who donates goods for the said school!

Signed K-ON!! Guitar Gets Quite a Bid!

Surprising, yes. Heck, even Mugi is surprised!

A seller named euf02us placed a guitar signed by the K-ON!!'s voice cast on auction on Yahoo! Japan on January 5, and a user placed a 9,999,999,999 Yen (US$120 million) "bid" on Monday morning!

Thanks to the questionable bid, the seller plans to cancel the current auction on Tuesday and re-offer the guitar at a later date. To those who are wondering where this signed guitar came from, last year, LAWSON a Japanese convience store chain ran a K-ON!! Fair promotional campaign from October 19 to November 29.

People who spent a certain amount at LAWSON stores could go online with numbers from their store receipts to see if they won prizes. By the second day of the campaign, LAWSON's computer and mobile phone home pages received over 1 million accesses in one day, and the company's website was temporarily unreachable for many users.

The campaign's top-level A Prizes were five replicas of Yui's guitar signed by the five cast members who voiced each member of Ho-kago Tea Time! Each guitar also came with a limited-edition hard case (with an imprinted HTT logo and key), set of clear stickers, shielded cord, tuning wrench, soft case, manual, and warranty certificate.

TBS sure loves to milk more out of the title! Aside from an upcoming movie, we will have this! Good luck to those planning to but the pink cassette player!

While trying to achieve this dream, they must work hard but first they must take tea breaks.

K-On! Manga's Last Installment this September

A footnote on the bottom of kakifly's K-ON! manga in the September issue of Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara magazine lists the next installment as the final one. The September issue officially ships on Monday, and the next issue, cover-dated for October, will ship on September 9. The four-panel comedy manga follows a group of high school girls who form an afterschool rock band.

The ending of the current K-ON! manga series is not necessarily the ending of the K-ON! story as a whole. Tsukasa Hojo ended his Angel Heart manga series in the current (and final issue) of Coamix's Weekly Comic Bunch magazine, but he already announced that the story will continue.

K-ON! Concert BD #1 Music BD in Japan so Far

The survey firm Oricon reports that the K-ON! Live Event Let's Go! Blu-ray concert disc is the top-selling music Blu-ray Disc release in Japan since Oricon started keeping records two years ago. It sold 22,000 copies to also rank as the #1 overall Blu-ray release during the June 28-July 4 week.

The K-ON! Live Event Let's Go! Blu-ray is the third music Blu-ray release to be the #1 overall weekly Blu-ray release — and the first since Nana Mizuki Live Diamond x Fever achieved that goal in December with 13,000 copies in its first week. The first music Blu-ray release to top the overall weekly chart was Namie Amuro Best Fiction Tour 2008-2009 with 14,000 copies in its first week.

Until now, Namie Amuro Best Fiction Tour 2008-2009 was also the top-selling music Blu-ray Disc release in Japan. However, the K-ON! Live Event Let's Go! Blu-ray sold more copies (22,000) in one week than Namie Amuro Best Fiction Tour 2008-2009 has sold (21,000) since September of last year. (Nana Mizuki Live Diamond x Fever has sold 17,000 copies since December.)

The DVD version of K-ON! Live Event Let's Go! ranked #4 on Oricon's weekly DVD sales chart.

Hougako Tea Time, First Anime Band on Top of Weekly Oricon Charts.

Being a fan of K-On!, I was rather angry at myself missing ONE episode of it! Now I am trying to catch up! But while I was looking for more things to put on this blog, I found this.
The five-girl band Hōkago Teatime from the K-ON!! anime series became the first anime characters to top Oricon survey firm's weekly singles chart. Not only did Hōkago Teatime's "Go! Go! Maniac" opening theme song for K-ON!! reach #1 for the week of April 26-May 2, but Hōkago Teatime's "Listen!!" ending theme song for K-ON!! ranked #2 for the same week. The band is only the third female act to ever rank one-two simultaneously on the chart and the first to do so in 26 years; Keiko Fuji accomplished that feat in 1970, and Seiko Matsuda did it in 1983.
Because of this, I am MORE persistent on finishing the show!

K-On!! Episode 1 – Seniors! Review.

This first episode review will be veeery quick since I don’t want to spoil those who are planning to watch K-On!! So, here’s a quick summary. The episode starts with Yui running late to school and went inside the music room and starts practicing her guitar skills. The rest arrived later on and saw Yui practicing. They asked why she is doing that and Yui replied that she is practicing her new guitar trick.

Azusa asked why this early, Yui replied that she thought she is late for school. Good ol’ Yui. Then opening credits starts to roll. Here's the OP by the way.

Here’s how the rest of the episode went, Light Music Club is finding new members and Yui, after what Nodoka said that next year Azusa will be all alone in the club room, it caused Yui to be more “inspired” to get more members for the club for her beloved junior. After a lot of weird attempts of finding members, all of these methods failed. And so, their last hope lies into their performance on-stage.

The girls waited for the whole day and no new freshmen arrived. Azusa asked her classmates if their performance is good, they replied it’s good. Thus, Azusa wondered why there are no new students entering the clubroom. One of her classmates replied, because the freshmen thought that these guys are too close and having them in will make them feel uncomfortable.

Azusa went to the music room in which she heard Yui saying that they should change nothing in the club. She wants the club to stay the same. Azusa, let’s just say, she was inspired and asked Mugi some milk tea and banana cake... and starts getting strict to Yui in terms of guitar practices! Then after this, ending credits starts to roll.

On to the review, for the first episode of K-On!! It’s decent. Not that bad or that good but decent. It’s like their second year all over again except they had Azusa with them helping them to gain more members. The only thing new in this episode is Yui’s opening guitar practice scene and the other things they do for them to gain new members, in which you have to find out yourselves.

As for the new Opening themes and Ending themes, unlike the first opening and ending themes, it might take some time for these songs to be stuck in your head. The first song was ear-bleeding in the first part until Yui slowed down in her vocals. The second song was not as good as Don’t Say “Lazy”.

Overall, a decent start for this new season.

K-On!! Teaser Trailer

The teaser trailer of the second season of K-On! entitled K-On!! is finally here!

Like what the trailer said, the original four members of After School Tea Time, namely Yui, Mio, Ritsu and Mugi are in their senior year in high school, while Azusa, is the only junior. K-On!! airs on April 6.

K-On! Animax Asia English Dub. Seriously, This Review Will Be Over... Quick.

I didn’t watch the recorded K-On! Episode 1 English Dub like a regular radio drama since in my opinion, it’s the best way to see if the dub is good. Here’s a reeeeeally quick review about the English dub of the show that aired on Animax Asia.
To those interested to watch, here’s the first episode.

To be honest, the only characters that have a decent dub are: Miss Sawako, Mio and Mugi, the rest were, well, below par from the original Japanese dub. Ritsu’s voice doesn’t have that forceful feel like in the original dub. Yui’s voice sounds too mature for her personality. But overall, decent.

So, what’s your opinion about the English dub?

Just Don't Say Lazy. K-On! Anime Review.

K-On! is a four-panel comic strip manga written and illustrated by Kakifly that was serialized by Manga Time Kirara since May 2007 issue. It was adapted into a 13-episode anime by Kyoto Animation best known for their work, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The 13-episode anime focuses on the earlier chapters of the manga. A sequel of the said series will air this April 7, 2010 entitled, K-On!! (With two exclamation marks).

Yui Hirasawa, a first year high school student wants something new in her life and she decided to join a club, but which club will she join? Meanwhile, Ritsu, who wants to join the Light Music Club, discovers that the club is closed for now because all the members of the said club graduated last school year, because of this, she dragged her friend Mio into joining the said club. And so, the Light Music Club has two members, which later added with Tsumugi better known as Mugi who is a prodigy in keyboard.

Let us go back to Yui. She sees a poster of the Light Music Club in the bulletin board thinking that Light Music is about playing “light” instruments such as the castanets. After she applied for the club, that were she found out that playing the castanets is not applicable for the said club! Yui decided to go to the clubroom and apologize to the members.

After the other three girls learned that their last member wants to quit, the three decided to convince her, by the sweets Mugi always bring to the clubroom, until finally, they were able to convince Yui to stay in the club by playing their music, which impressed Yui and finally, joined the club. They asked her if she knows any instrument, she replied she does not know how to play any instrument. Ouch.

As the series progressed, Yui learns how to play the guitar and later, became the lead vocalist of the band. After series of practices, it is time for the club to shine, but there is one problem, they do not have an adviser. After discovering that Miss Sawako was a member of the Light Music Club back in her day in high school, Ritsu blackmailed her into becoming their adviser if she didn’t agree, Ritsu will spread the word that behind the demeanor of a kind-hearted teacher is once a member of a metal band back in her day. With no other choice, Miss Sawako became the club’s adviser.

As the girls bond getting tighter, on their second year in high school, they were added with a new member, Azusa, a first year student, who plays the guitar longer than Yui thanks to her parents’ musical background.

On to the review, to be honest, what shines in K-On! Is not their performance onstage but the events that happened backstage. K-On!, if you remove the music, the band, it will be a regular teen drama about four girls and their dream of becoming famous someday. If you ask me, it is too ordinary, but what K-On! did is different, what they did is they decided to make the lead character, in the person of Yui of someone who has no aim at first, into someone who has a goal in life, to perform in a large stage with legions of fans supporting them. K-On! is the coming of age story of Yui Hirasawa from an air headed, irresponsible elder sister to Ui into a person who has a goal in life with her friends behind her along the way.

Now, the animation of the show, what amazes me with shows with music as their theme is that how the animators did their job in animating the instrument playing sequences, in K-On!’s case, the instrument playing scenes is well animated.

In terms of the show’s music, let’s just say, most of their songs are inside my head for more than 3 days after the first time I heard it. I mean, Yui’s vocals on their song, Light and Fluffy Time is stuck in head! Plus, the show’s ending theme, Don’t Say Lazy is stuck for days, heck, I am singing it inside our bathroom!

In terms of voice acting, each VA did a good job in their character. Yui’s VA did a good impression on her character’s air headedness. One thing I have to praise in the voice acting is Sawako’s voice acting, she did a good job in portraying her two personalities! Boy, I love her metal scream in one of their songs!

Overall, for a thirteen-episode show, it really did a good job in terms of story and animation, it is probably one of the most successful thirteen-episode anime shows since The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Because of the impression this show left, I am convinced to watch Beck: The Mongolian Chop Squad, another anime that involves a band. Now, all I have to do is wait for April for K-On!!
