Steve Wang wants 555 or Kabuto

In this clip from their Power Morphicon panel, we learned that Steve Wang, the one responsible in adapting Ryuki in the US as Kamen Rider: Dragon Knight that he is a fan of Kamen Rider V3! I'll just let this clip do all the talking.

Hearing Kit and Len utter "HENSHIN!" was really awesome. Hope that Steve Wang has the enough funds to adapt 555 or Kabuto, to be exact, I want Kabuto. Let's see how Steve Wang can handle the suits, to be exact, TheBee Zecter and the theme. Hope he will retain grandma's quotes!

Raspberry Heaven. Azumanga Daioh: The Animation Anime Review

Azumanga Daioh: The Animation is an anime produced by JC Staff based by the four-panel comic strip of the same name by Kiyohiko Azuma that was serialized on Dengeki Daioh from 1999-2002. The series is about the daily lives of six Japanese schoolgirls during their three years in high school and in some point, the daily lives of their teachers.

The series is about the daily lives of six Japanese school girls in an unnamed high school in which we are introduced to Chiyo Mihama, a child prodigy and is five years younger than the other main cast. Then, we are introduced to the other girls. Sakaki, the big busted and silent one in the group who loves cats but cats hate her, Koyomi “Yomi” Mizuhara, who has an obsession in dieting while trying to maintain her composure because of her hyperactive best friend, Tomo Takino who thinks she is the best but it’s the complete opposite of it. To add up to this crazy bunch, we are introduced to Osaka, I mean, Ayumu Kasuga who is a transfer student from Osaka, spacey and had a different perspective of the world around her that in some point that she thought that Chiyo’s ponytails are unscrewable! And thanks to Tomo, she gain the nickname, Osaka and it stucked ever since. Oh, I forgot Kaorin, their classmate who has a crush on Sakaki and that’s all you need to know!

During the course of the series, we are introduced to their homeroom adviser and English teacher, Yukari Tanizaki and her friend, the more serious (By serious, I mean she is not as crazy like her friend) Minamo Kurosawa. We are also introduced to a pedophile Math teacher only known as Kimura-sensei (Or Sir Kimura if you watched the Filipino dub like me.).

On their second year, because of Yukari-sensei’s obsession in winning their school sports fest, Kagura was added to her class. Kagura is once part of Kurosawa-sensei’s class and part of her swimming team, sporty and has a one-sided rivalry with Sakaki.

On to the review, even after countless reruns that I watched this series, I still have a hard time in making my final thought about the series but I will try my best to review this one.

Anyways, because of the rather weird title, Azumanga Daioh which turned out to be a play of the name of the author, Kiyohiko Azuma and the fact that it is a manga which was serialized in Dengeki Daioh, I am not sure is worthy to be watched. But because of some good advertising, I watch it and end up loving it!

The series is about the daily lives of six Japanese schoolgirls during the course of their high school education in Japan. Aside from the fact that we have a glimpse on the Japanese education system, the series wins with the good timing of their humor and where to insert the series’ recurring humor such as Osaka’s spacey attitude. The moe factor is a plus point in the series plus, having a pedophile math teacher adds up to the series’ humor.

Even if the show is humor filled, there are some parts of the series that they insert some drama, and saw the other side of our crazy characters. A perfect example is the last episode in which Kagura had a conversation with one of her teachers (Its Yukari or Kurosawa I forgot.) about bringing a desk to her home as a remembrance in her high school years.

Because this series chronicles the daily lives of schoolgirls, there are some recurring episodes and from those recurring episodes, the episode that I always look forward too is the episodes in which they will stay in Chiyo’s rest house beside the beach. This is where I saw the evolution of the characters… if they had a character development or saw if their static-ness as characters has reached new heights… like Osaka!

Speaking of which, I want to talk about one of series’ weirdest and spaciest (If that term exist) character, Osaka. There are some instances that she carries the entire series at her back making her one of the most recognizable characters in the series. Due to her spacey attitude, you don’t know what is the next thing she will do! During their last visit in Chiyo’s rest house, we saw Osaka carry a knife and she just want to wake up Yukari-sensei!

Aside from the daily lives of the students, we also took a glimpse of the daily lives of their teachers. The fun thing about this series is that they broke the gap between student-teacher relationships. Their teachers are too close with their students that they even go to the annual rest house trips and even provide transportation to the girls! To top it all of, there is one episode in which Kurosawa-sensei got drunk and started teaching the girls about “the birds and the bees” and obviously, Chiyo doesn’t understand due to her age!

Because of its focus, we also saw the growth of the friendship of various characters, from Chiyo accepted in their class aside from the fact that she is cute until their various conversations about random topics. My only problem with the series about this part is that there is no episode in which Yomi was totally fed up with Tomo. By totally, Yomi never spoke to Tomo in the entire episode or caused Tomo to change her character. Yes, we saw her change in the series… well just her hairstyle. That’s it.

Overall, Azumanga Daioh: The Animation is one of the series you might consider an epitome of its genre; you might even say that this series is a classic. Considering that its humor is properly timed and they know where they will insert a recurring joke or when we will saw them saw their other side as characters. At the end of this review, Kimura-sensei being a pedophile with a cute daughter and a beautiful wife still bothers me.

Hayate no Gotoku to be Adapted in Taiwan

The popular manga and anime by Kenjirou Hata, Hayate no Gotoku (Hayate the Combat Butler), will be adapted into a live-action series in Taiwan according to sources from Anime News Network. To those who don't know the series, it is about Hayate who serves as an all-around butler (By all-around, he cooks, fights bad guys, pilot a mecha, execute a Rider Kick to random bad guys, cross dresses. That all-around.) to Nagi for him to pay his 156,804,000-yen debt.

In this adapation, Park Shin-Hye (Stairway to Heaven, You're Beautiful, High Kick) will play as Nagi while Hayate will be played by George Hu (Hot Shot, Romantic Princess) will play as his butler, Hayate.

Based on my experience with Taiwanese adaptations, they try their best to be as close as its source material. But knowing the series, which is filled with anime, manga and tokusatsu references, plus they have a talking pet tiger, Tama, I am not sure if the Taiwanese drama can stay true to the original.

Golgo 13 07 – Hit Kotomi’s Violin G-String Next!

 That's gonna hurt.

In this episode, we are in London in which we met a British violinist named Thomas Simpson who is playing with the London Symphony Orchestra. After his first play, he had an encore in which our plot revolves. He broke his violin’s G-string, humiliating himself and caused a psychological trauma in him that prevented him to play in front of a crowd.

Because of this, a Russian violinist named Kerensky replaced him in a charity concert due to his problem in playing. Since he was his rival according to his opinion, he asked Golgo 13 to humiliate him… by hitting the G-string on his violin. Wow. What a weird request. At the end of the episode, Golgo did hit the G-string but Kerensky kept his cool and continued playing using the D-string. Poor Simpson, he was more humiliated after seeing Kerensky kept his cool.

On to the review, aside from learning more about music and about the violin, we learn about how precise Golgo is. Sure, we saw his precision in the previous episodes, but this. This is crazy. He was able to hit the G-string without breaking the violin, making it clean giving the impression the Kerensky actually broke the G-string and no sniper did it.

On target, an innocent violin.

When Kotomi’s violin playing skills debut on TV5, and incidentally, Golgo 13 is still being aired, there is one comment I read on the internet that says, “Someone hire Golgo 13 and asked him to hit Kotomi’s G-string!” To those who don’t know, Kotomi’s violin playing skills can cause the world to burn to make it more specific, it will cause your ears to bleed, worse than Megumi of Speical A’s singing in a short distance. Now I understand what he feels. I think I should do a Photoshop image of Golgo hitting Kotomi’s violin… *Starts his evil plan.*

Golgo 13 01 – At Pin-Hole! Review

 The name's Duke. Duke Togo.

Due to the events of the Quirino Grandstand Hostage Taking, I suddenly remembered a certain assassin, a sniper to be exact named Duke Togo aka Golgo 13 who hits all his targets in whatever distance 100% accurately. Thanks to my LSS, Take the Wave, the first OP theme of the anime, I decided to download episodes 1 and 7. Here is the review of its first episode.

The series kicks off in a plain in which a guy wants to go the bathroom, but since the plain is about to experience turbulence and as we all know, everyone must return to their seats, wear their seatbelts but this guy, wants to go to the bathroom. After being confronted by someone, it turned out to be he is a hijacker and hijacks the plane. He wants to go to Colombia but the plane needs to refuel so, they took a stop over in Dallas.

Meanwhile, in a US prison, an Asian was freed because someone needs his skills and his name is Duke Togo. Opening credits starts to roll. If you watched the TV5 ANiMEGA telecast this year, you might noticed the rather neat editing they did on the opening sequence. Want to know why? There is a scene in which we saw a lady’s butt and there is one scene in which we saw nipples of a blonde lady which in the TV5 telecast, they simply grayed it out to make it look like that the blonde girl was never focused.

After the OP credits, let’s go back to the plane. The police now surround him and the plane is being refueled. Back in the prison, we saw Duke left the building and welcomed by a CIA and a FBI agent. After their brief introductions, the agent then asked Golgo to kill the hijacker. It turned out to be he is an informant of the Pentagon regarding on drug syndicates and the like. In exchange on his services, they gave him military info little did Pentagon know that he is planning to sell military secrets to other countries. Due to the tight passport check in international flights, he decides to hijack a plane for domestic flights so that he would not take those inspections.

At first, Duke wants to decline the offer even if the agent offered him his minimum fee, $ 3,000,000, yes, that is his minimum fee, but because of the challenge of the agent about him being a professional assassin, he accepts the offer. On a secluded area, inside a pink car has all the information Golgo needs for the mission… and leaves the area with. His. Pink. Car. O_O

Back at the hijacker, the police want to kill him right now thus someone suggested on using snipers but because of the distance and they do not know who can shoot on a long distance, that suggestion was dropped. Back at Golgo, he went into a bar rides an elevator going down along with an aide, and was pointed to Dave a gunsmith.

After Dave gave him his best gun, Golgo uses it to practice it. After saying the problems about the gun, and asked him to fix the gun for three hours, in which according to Dave is impossible. This where he starts to screw the rules because he has money and so, Dave accepts the job offer thanks to amount offered by Golgo.

Back at the hijacker, the idea was again put into consideration but this time, the agents from earlier are back and said that there is someone who can do it and he is busy preparing right now. This is where in the TV5 telecast the censorship ensues and they have a good reason for it!

While Dave is fixing the gun, Golgo is busy having sex with a prostitute! As we saw Dave fix the gun, flashes of Duke doing the deed are seen on the screen. In the TV5 edit, those scenes where remove and instead we have a scene in which Dave is fixing the gun. Ladies and Gentleman, TV5 is safe from MTRCB!

After doing the deed and the prostitute demanding for more in which Golgo declines (This scene was aired in the TV5 telecast BTW), the mafia who demands that certain Asian’s head because he killed a mafia boss prior to the series knew Duke’s location and starts shooting his door! After we saw Golgo’s gun skills, he left the building with the prostitute, bewildered on the events.

Meanwhile, the refueling is over. To give Golgo more time, they decided to use the snipers to shoot the tire. Because of the flat tire, it gave them more time to wait for Golgo.

Back at Golgo, he receives the gun from Dave and upon seeing the laptop that the direction of the plane is different, Golgo was just silent and leaves the place. He is the guy who never leaves his mission. Cool. Back at the airport, a small plane arrives from the tarmac of the airport. Golgo has arrived. He positions himself, loads the bullet, aims and hits the target on the head. The hijacker is now dead. Everyone is safe.

Wow. Golgo Broadcasting! Wow. Errors in a US Broadsheet in the Header!

The next day, we saw on the newspaper the headlines. According to it, an FBI agent killed the hijacker. Dave knew that Golgo was successful and just smiled.

On to the review, when I first watched it with some cuts (which was necessary considering they aired a seinen/adult anime title at 7pm!), it never ruined the fun factor of episode. The episode tells us on how badass Golgo was. It tells us most on Golgo’s personality. He is cautious thanks to his personality that he wants a person to came in a car first before he will enter the vehicle.

Aside from learning about Golgo’s personality, we learned that the mafia hates him because of what he did proper to the series and based on what I remember, this is not the last time we will see them. We also learned about his knowledge in the use of guns. He is specific in terms of his rifle, the weight, the proper calibration, the recoil, everything that is related to it.

We also learned that this is not the first time in the assassin business considering that the CIA and FBI know him and he knew that those two agencies never worked together nor cooperate to each other. In addition, we learned about his reputation as an assassin and that he is someone you should not mess with.

My problem with the first episode is that the first few parts are boring especially the parts that they are talking about the demands of the hijacker.

Overall, the first episode is great to watch if you are into assassins and snipers, this is the show for you. However, if you were a younger audience, I would not recommend this show for you due to those “scenes,” even if they were just random shots of Duke doing the deed… with no reaction. I am dead serious he is worst that Yuki Nagato in terms of their facial expressions.

Black Rock Shooter OVA Review

Black Rock Shooter is an OVA based on the song with the same name sung by Supercell that uses the famous Vocaloid synthesizer, Hatsune Miku based on the illustations by Huke. It was released last July 24, 2010 and was subtitled with seven different languages.

Note to Readers: The summary was arranged in chronological order so that you will not be confused with the turn of events.

Mato Kuroi, who is just starting her first year in middle school, makes friends with Yomi Takanashi who has just moved in town. Two became close and started to hang out together. Later, Mato decides to join the basketball club and after seeing that the volleyball club is practicing at the same gym, she joins them. At the end of their first year, Mato gives Yomi the same cellphone charm that she has at her favorite spot in their town.

On their second year, the two were separated thanks to their sections but still hangs out together. Unlike before, there is a third character that came in, Yuu, the basktetball club’s manager and Mato’s classmate. As the two became more close to each other, Yomi becomes jealous until one day, she disappeared.

Mato is worried sick in looking for her. She did everything she can do just to find her until one day, she received a blank text message coming from Yomi and she suddenly she decides to go the spot I which she gave that cellphone charm on Yomi.

Mato finds the charm and was transported to a different world. A girl that partly resembles Lenalee Lee of D.Gray-Man, asked her if she wants to save the girl, probably referring to Yomi. Mato replied that she wants to be with Yomi like before, walking, talking about their thoughts and doing the things they loved to do together.

Mato asked the girl who she is, she never replied, instead, they fused and after this, this is where we learned about her name, her name is Black Rock Shooter. As Black Rock Shooter, she starts to wander around in this new world, until finally, she met Yomi who is right now being possessed by Dead Master and the battle between Black Rock Shooter and Dead Master begins. Can Black Rock Shooter save Yomi?

On to the review, the title does not employ a straight narrative, instead the events that happened in another world where told in-between the scenes that are happening in the real world, giving an impression that those events happen simultaneously until Yomi appeared at the end of the battle between BRS and Dead Master.

XTREEEME!

This type of storytelling is both a problem and the beauty of the OVA. Problem because if you are a person who wants to watch a title that doesn’t employ much thinking, you might think that Yomi appearing at the end would be a plot hole and the scene that Mato and BRS imitated Kamen Rider W’s henshin sequence when the duo, Shotaro and Philip first went into CycloneJoker Xtreme as a hunch that there would be a sequel… unless you didn’t watch the scene after the end credits.

Beauty of it because it allows you to think on how this event on the story fit while watching the OVA for the second or third time just for you to better understand the story while you enjoy watching the fluid battles between Black Rock Shooter and Dead Master.

I think the reason why the director decided that the battle between BRS and Dead Master would be seen simultaneously between the events prior before Yomi disappeared. It is because in my own opinion, the scenes that happened in the real world bored me that I would rather skip the scenes in their first year and go straight to the events in the other world.

As for the animation, studio Ordet did a great job in the animation of the OVA. When I first watched the OVA, I thought Kyoto Animation is in-charge with the animation due to how fluid the scenes where. The fight scenes between BRS and Dead Master are so fluid that it amazes me every second I watch them fight. The rather black and white ambiance adds the mystery on who is Black Rock Shooter and why is she fighting Dead Master.

Since the best part about BRS is the scenes in the other world, it would be best if I would describe it. It was a barren wasteland, kinda like how the world looks like in Casshern Sins except that there are no robots and we have a girl that carries a rock cannon that looks like Lenalee Lee. One of the biggest mysteries that bother me about BRS is why is that star-shaped cellphone charm is the transportation device to the other world? Oh, well, its anime expect the weirdest thing to happen!

The story of BRS is about the friendship between Mato and Yomi and eventually, on their growth after Yuu appeared. This tale is the one that drives the story to the other world. Will you go to a different just to save your friend? This is what the story is all about. Friendship being tested in strange circumstances.

As for the characters, Mato was the classic airhead, Yomi was the mature one and Yuu was… that girl who was added in the later part of the story, nothing special with her, or is it? For the start of the series, Black Rock Shooter, she being silent for the long time in the OVA adds the mystery of the character. I mean, her entire fight with Dead Master, she never talks, same with her enemy. They just exchange glances and expressions, which gives a dramatic feel to the OVA.

Which leads us to best part of the series, the battle scenes; I have been praising it earlier on because of its fluid animation. However, the best thing about the battle is the fact that the characters never speak to each other! This adds depth to the characters as BRS is shooting flaming blue cannon balls to Dead Master. Like I said earlier, it adds the mystery between who is Black Rock Shooter and who is Dead Master and why are they fighting. Heck, I learned her name was Dead Master (The one who looked like Yomi) after reading the character profiles in this OVA’s official website! See how silent they are?

AU Yuu?

During the course of the OVA, a mysterious figure is lurking around the strange world and at the end of the OVA, Yuu seems to act strange, is it me or we will have a possible sequel in the future?

Overall, Black Rock Shooter is a fun OVA to watch. If you love the song, you will love the OVA too because of the plot and the scenes between Black Rock Shooter and dead Master. If you are just a casual anime viewer, I suggest that you must skip the parts in their first year and go straight to their battles during their first year and the last few scenes in their first year for one simple reason, this where the plot of the story starts kicking in after the build up.

The animation is splendid and one of the best things about the OVA… it goes with the soundtrack! Hope that Huke and the writers will decide to create a sequel of this masterpiece!

BLACK ROCK SHOOTER MV

Here's something that I will review this weekend before hitting the books and review for my midterms! One of Summer 2010's anticipated OVA releases, Black Rock Shooter.

Kamen Rider OOO Episode 1 Preview?

It seems someone has leaked a new CM of Kamen Rider OOO online! On the looks of it, it seems like it looks like a preview for the first episode.

What a weird way to start the series!

Voltes V Tagalog Version

Basically, if you grew up in the 90's (or the Martial Law Era) you'll remember that Voltes V is very popular here in the Philippines. And on its nth rerun on local tv stations, GMA7 to be exact, a spoof group called Ang Dating Doon created a spoof song based on Voltes V's opening song. And here it is.

Honestly, on my first try listening to it, it really sonded like the original but if you listen more carefully, you'll hear some familar Filipino words sounded similar than the original lyrics.

ALIEN?! ALIEN!!!

Triple Change Henshin Belt Vol. 1 Review

Someone in YouTube has just uploaded a review of the Triple Change Henshin Belt Vol. 1 which features Decade, Kiva and Amazon.

... So basically, the belt just lights up, and that's it?! I mean, did they pull an effort just to give Condora a detachable part in which I would love to scream Condora on top of a 44-floored building?!

Update: Vol. 2 of this series will have V3, BLACK and Kabuto. Here's the link.

S.W.A.T., Uzis and Major Major Random

It’s the last two days of the week and it seems that we have one hell of a week. To kick things off, we will start with the Hostage Crisis. The reason why I decided to post my thoughts about the crisis this late is that I want to have my thoughts cleared up so that this post would not be… crappy.

For years living in the Philippines, I am used to hear that our police is does not have enough equipment, not swift enough that even films always portray them appearing at the end of the film! But this, this is madness. In the time they need to prove themselves that they are not those stereotype police officers in movies, they did this! I mean, look on their approach when the police decided to end the crisis in a forceful way. They look like they never experienced this kind of situation! To those whose memory is failing, let me remind you. Sometime in 2007 or 2008 or the time when Pedro Penduko is being aired on TV, there is a similar hostage crisis that happened. Whoops, they had experienced this kind of situation and based on what I remembered that they would try their best to be prepared in case this happens again.

Fast forward to the year 2010, we saw them using a sledgehammer to destroy a window BUT since they just smashed it without knowing the material of the glass, it was not effective. When they already made a hole, because of bad aiming, the teargas never went on target and caused a couple of media personnel and the police themselves to get watery eyed with the teargas.

Like what my idol, Erwin Tulfo said, they do not act like the S.W.A.T., which means Special Weapons and Tactics. Wait, that is the definition of S.W.A.T.? You have to be kidding me. Seriously, the S.W.A.T. team failed big time. They lack Special Weapons and they look like they are n00bs in playing Counter-Strike, OP7, Special Force or any First Player Shooter game that you might here. About their Tactics? Where is it? Oh, using a sledgehammer is their tactic along with moving to the side and not thinking that the culprit might use his guns to ward them off.

Just yesterday, I learned that they actually practiced for that event. But because they never anticipated the possible moves of their enemy, their practice failed. Sure, you can blame the guy who called Mendoza but why don’t you blame you lack of capacity to think of the possibilities that Mendoza will do? I mean, if I am on the situation of the police, I might think of at least five or seven possibilities on what will Mendoza do based on his position, based on his mood and especially, based on his weapons.

So, I agree on the new definition of S.W.A.T. Sorry, Wala Akong Training (Trans. Sorry, I Don’t Have Training).

Camwhores. Pfft.

The fun part of the events during and after the hostage incident is the Uzis, I mean, the curios passersby who just happened to cross the police fence. To those who don’t know what is an Uzi, an Uzi is short for the Filipino term, usisero or usisera which means, those who want to know what is happening on this place even if he is not related to the person.

If you are checking various Facebook, Twitter or Plurk accounts, you might notice the pictures or links of pictures of various students taking a picture behind the bus, and boy, they all look happy! Plus, the fun thing is that instead, the police officers are warding them off, they just let them take pictures even they have no authority to take them! To top it off, the police themselves also took pictures along with the Uzis! This only happens Only in the Philippines! Now I understand why some pessimistic Pinoys prefer calling Philippines as FAILippines

Another thing that is proudly Pinoy is Maria Venus Raj, rah, ra-ah-ah! Roma, roma-ma-ma! Sorry, can’t help myself to sing Bad Romance everytime I mention her family name. Back to regular business, Maria Venus… Raj is one of the early favorites of the Ms. Universe pageant and has high hopes in winning the competition. When the day came, for the first time after years in following Ms. Universe in my TV if I had the chance to watch it I didn’t switch to another channel after the announcement of the top contenders! Ms. Philippines were there until the Top 5. The moment of truth came, the question and answer portion.

Here question was, “What is the biggest mistake in your life?” Her answer, major major not related to the question or probably she was just major major nervous on her answer. Aw, come on, Venus! You have an answer! Remember you were almost dethroned with the crown? You might use that experience! And so, she end up the 4th placer, not bad considering that the Philippines is in a dry spell in Ms. Universe.

Aside from her rather major major weird answer, is a birth of a major major Pinoy meme. Yes, those words she mentioned, major major.

What does everyone need to forget all about this? Another Filipino achievement from Charice, Arnel Pineda, Manny Pacquiao or some other PNoy who might so something about this situation after him being bombarded by issues regarding a certain Luisita.
