Marvel Anime: X-Men 01 - The Return - Joining Forces Review

I know I am extremely late with X-Men but since I am reviewing the Marvel Anime Series since Iron Man, I have every right to review the series this late, so expect the next review will be a review of eps 2-4. Back to X-Men, the series starts with an opening battle depicting a rampaging Phoenix/Jean Grey. Why is it that in every X-Men adaptation I watched has this scene?!

The opening battle caused my jaw to drop and my fingers to keep on getting screencaps (sadly, I can only place four of the most important caps here) due to how good the animation is in this scene. Also, the fact that they were able to make a scene about a rampaging Jean Grey looked good and emotional at the same time, especially in Scott's case since Jean is her girlfriend/wife (it wasn't explain what is the current status between the two in this series).

Another thing I can praise in this episode is how the quality of the fights increased in this series. Seriously, the fights from Iron Man were crappy, while the fight choreography in Wolverine improved so much that it made Iron Man the worst Madhouse anime that I know. While this show, it raised the bar in terms of fights and animation that I do not know what to expect from the Blade anime in terms of those departments.

As for the events that happened a year later, it was fine with me. First, they showed our heroes (less Scott) are now back in their normal lives. Ororo is taking a vacation somewhere, Hank is back teaching and Logan is having his vacation in Madripoor... so the thing that I read in Cracked.com about him being a rich guy in Madripoor is true, no wonder he gained a lot after the Wolverine anime!

As for Scott, well he turned into the Emo Scott that I hate in most X-Men adaptations I know. Seriously, get a hold on yourself Scott! Stop acting like a wuss and be the man whose claim to fame is to shoot Brotherhood members with his optic blast and know to argue with Logan a lot!

If there is one thing I am disappointed with the pilot episode is their new mission after a year, and that is to look for some Japanese girl named Hisako Ichiki (aka Armor, yes she exist in the comics) who was missing. But as they keep on adding more details about this mission, such as the number of mutants in the area and the fact that Professor X can't sense them gives me more reasons that this is indeed an important mission for the X-Men to handle.

How the episode ended was classic, it is one of the elements that I loved in the X-Men franchise and that is, Logan trying to shake Scott off from his emo mode and force him to return in his old self. But in this anime, it didn't work... for now. Even if Logan's method didn't work, Ororo's persuasion helped Scott remember Jean and returned into the good ol' Scott we know. It was a perfect end to Scott's emo self which I am irritated at.

Overall, it was a really impressive episode. Compared to the previous first episodes of the Marvel Anime Series, this is definitely my favorite due to how well balance the action and the plot in this episode. Also, one thing that I can highly praise in this episode is that Logan is not stealing the spotlight most of the time, and most of the scenes that involves Logan is something relevant and common with the X-Men franchise. In simple terms, there is proper focus with each X-Man that appeared in this episode.

Lastly, the character depictions here are pretty much spot with their comic book counterparts, same goes for the character designs that improved, no the art in X-Men is a total art shift! Oh and final note, I love that they have two sets of costumes and the fact that they continued what Wolverine started in terms of story, which is it is based on an actual comic book series that has more than one Japanese character in it and add more Japanese flavor for the final touch.

Ao no Exorcist 01 - Demons Live in the Human Heart Review

Well what do you know, a protagonist who has a constantly gets fired in his part-time jobs, often gets into fights and lastly, has a name that sounds like a girl's name. The standard traits of a regular shonen anime hero. In this first episode, we met his opposite, his younger brother, their guardian which is a priest-slash-exorcist (Yes, the Church has those guys, heck it even has its own department!) and blue flames. Hey, that is why this show is called Blue Exorcist in the first place!

The series had a slow start after the scene in which the priest was engulfed in blue flames which left quite a good impression on me, animation-wise. As for what’s happening the entire episode, it talks about Rin's regular life as a 15 year old not attending school in which he spends his time either inside the convent or outside working for some job (which he later gets fired at) or fights some random thugs (who are doing something mean).

I find this premise weird at the same time interesting since this kind of scenario rarely happens on shonen anime. The last shonen anime that I remembered that started on this was Flame of Recca and Yu Yu Hakusho.

First impressions on the characters, Rin is interesting. Even if he looks like someone you should avoid once you meet him in a street corner but he had the opposite attitude. He is kind, helpful and tries his best to help others even if he ends up being fired in his job. His younger brother, Yukio is his complete opposite, a perfect son I might add. Never left quite a mark on me. As for their guradian, the priest (forgot his name, and Wikipedia is failing at me at this moment) best role model ever. Nuff said.

Like I said earlier, this shonen anime reminded me a bit of Flame of Recca due to how it started, it is also the case on how it ended when they finally revealed the central plot of this series and saw some badass priest action. The revelation about the protagonist being related to the devil (take a guess who is this devil) felt a bit cliched but if it works for the plot, I will just let it pass. Also that katana that the priest has been keeping sealed still interest me at this moment.

Overall, it was a slow first episode but the later twist at the near end of the episode (also the priest having his own crowning moment of awesome) keeps me glued in my computer monitor and giving me the desire to watch the next episode, which I will do once I am done watching Deadman Wonderland.

Siam Shade Reunites for Earthquake Victims!

The classic JRock group, Siam Shade who disbanded almost a decade ago has just posted a message on their official website for the victims of last March's devasting earthquake and tsunami.

We thought a lot about what we can do for the victims of the tragedy that hit Japan, and we’ve come to the conclusion that what we can do is to deliver our ‘music’. If the five of us coming back together will bring hope and energy to people, then one more time! We hope to deliver the ‘ROCK’ that we believe in. Through music we want to deliver courage, hope, and the power to strive. That is our wish and that is our hope. Let’s meet at the live concert!

Yes folks, Siam Shade returns for one more time for the earthquake victims. The last time the band reunited was on their 2007 Budokan concert and last October, they released a tribute album to foreign artist called, SIAM SHADE Tribute.

Most anime fans remembered the band as who sang Rurouni Kenshin's sixth opening theme, 1/3 no Junjou na Kanjou. Recently, FLOW made a cover of this classic anime hit for their FLOW Best Anime Album.

[C]: Control: The Money and Soul of Possibility 01 - Complication Review

Before doing this review, I did a quick Wikipedia check on it and in my surprise, Tatsunoko Productions (Casshern, Yatterman) is producing this! Oh my, more reasons to blog this title! Anyways, in the first episode, we got a hobo playing children's card games in field known as Financial District, creepy Willy Wonka (I blame this) and lastly, some random college student who ended up in the hobo's situation!

For starters, I am a sucker in things that Tatsunoko Prod. produces that is why in case I heard some classic Tatsunoko title being subbed, I end up watching it and seeing a new Tatsunoko title that is not a remake, is quite surprising. Unlike the funky heroes that Tatsunoko offered us in the years, our protagonist, Kimimaro is an average college student who works two part time jobs for his future.

He has no special abilities whatsoever like the other Tatsunoko protagonist before him (namely, two mechanics who wears colorful jumpers, a cyborg robot who serves a M. Bison expy). Because of this, I expect that he will grow into one fine hero because he started off as one plain character.

As for my first impression about the concept of the series, I love the fact that the Financial District is one colorful place with beings known as "Assets" fight alongside with their boss. The card game elements adds up more to the show's theme which is, instant money and for them to earn it, they must "gamble" their Assets to earn more. It is fresh and the fact that show's opening battle doesn't feature any major elements found on anime titles that involves children's card games, the producers don't have a chance to cash cow this series by selling cards based on the creatures living in the Financial District.

As for the first episode, it first starts off with a bang and gradually eases down till it leads to our protagonist and slowly ends up psychological as creepy Willy Wonka Masakaki appears and offers Kimimaro the chance to join the Financial District as one of its Entrepreneurs. It was fun how Masakaki trolls Kimimaro in this episode, pure entertainment. If there is one aspect about this episode that I really liked is the fact that Kimimaro is poor which gives him more reasons to gamble his future in this shady Financial District!

Overall, it is one exciting first episode that gives me high hopes about the upcoming episodes in the future. What's more is that the fact that it talks about getting money from some shady figure is one fun concept to watch. Asides from the story, the animation was really good. If there is something I can praise about the animation is that it has a good balance between CGI and traditional.
