So what’s with the –san honorific at the title? That’s for emphasis on how Gai calls our resident Doctor! Anyways, the episode is basically a standard “I hate the new guy because he made this/that/me look bad” kind of thing. Oh, and Gold Mode makes it debut.
Doc has every right to get jealous on Gai. Asides that he has his own mecha, his own personalized changer, and can fight well in his civilian state, the fact that he is just a newbie gives more reasons why Doc is jealous of him. I mean, you are the third longest member of Marvelous’ crew, and what do you get? A bounty on your head worth 5,000 and the first person that the crew can rely on in terms of non-pirate stuff such as cooking or examining a space rock. His slow warming up on Gai as the new member of the team was rushed in my opinion because it wasn’t that believable in my opinion.
I mean, if you look at Ryunosuke and Genta’s case, Ryunosuke showed open resentment since day 1 that he doesn’t want a sushi vendor to be a samurai. The later focus episode about the two justified and Genta tried his best just for Ryunosuke to see that he is indeed a samurai. Oh, and the fact that I didn’t notice in the end that Ryunosuke already accepted Genta made the scene looked natural in my taste. In the case of Doc and Gai, Doc finally recognized Gai after Navi told Doc what happened during yesterday’s clean up… and that’s about it?!
As for the Gold Mode, I rather have it than to see a new costume based on the notable elements of all 15 Warriors. The only thing that bothered me is the flaps in the armor, which looked weird during battle. For the finisher, probably the best finishers the series has. As for Gai’s imagination powers, it didn’t make much proper sense, but hey, it’s Sentai in which the city of Tokyo is fully reconstructed after one giant monster attack within one week.
Overall, it was a fun episode, but it felt rushed in some angles and didn’t have any proper build up in terms of Doc’s resentment towards Gai save for Gai calling him “Don” in the previous episode that is which I find one shallow reason to hate the guy.
