Since Over-Time and Super Hero Time! started subbing this I decided to watch it and boy, what an really good premiere for a Super Sentai series! Anyways, the series kicks off in the year 3000 with recruits of the Time Defense Bureau being introduced. Meanwhile in some facility, mafia leader, Don Dornheiro is about to be placed under cryostasis. This is when the opening starts to get interesting.
If there is one word that comes in my mind during the show’s first few minutes that would be, wow. Just wow. The first few episodes never felt like any average Super Sentai opening, but more like of an opening from some Western sci-fi series or movie! Heck, I spotted a couple of scenes that are quite similar to Star Wars and Star Trek! Heck, the time travelling scene felt like they shifted into hyper drive!
What adds more to the sci-fi thing is the atmosphere in the future, the holograms, how the “lighting” in the scenes in the future looked like along with the aliens and how the beings living in the future dressed up. What’s more is that altering history is serious business that adds up to the futuristic feel that this show has.
If there is one thing I noticed about this series is that their enemy likes to disguise as Captain Ryuya, which makes me think that there is something fishy about that guy. Heck, even after it was all cleared up that Ryuya has nothing to do with what is happening, I still have this feeling that Ryuya is an important character after his look alike, Tetsuya appeared and became an accident Timeranger.
As for the core cast that appeared in the episode, Tetsuya, Yuri, Sion and Domon stood out, most especially Yuri. If there is one thing that I hate about most Pink Rangers is because of their “princess” attitude and Yuri broke that notion that not all Pink Rangers are like that, in Yuri’s case, she is a capable fighter and leads the group after the fake Ryuya left. Also, she is a cop.
As for Sion, I just love his eccentricity. As for Domon, he trying to flirt Yuri was fun as so as his other reactions… so yeah. For Tetsuya, the fact that he was just some random passerby still interests me along with the fact that he was an accidental Red Ranger. For our Blue Ranger… who was he anyway?
First impression about the Londars Family, they are one cunning group of villains. I mean, they fooled a couple of people for them to escape plus the fact that they are a mafia family along with their desire to change time for their own advantage makes them one really good group of villains to watch.
For the transformation sequence, it has this “space” and “digital” feeling in it, the use of CGI in the transformation sequence of the helmets digitally materializing in their heads felt a bit weird for my taste due to how odd the CGI face models looked like, but hey, the show was created during the year 2000 so I will let it pass. For the fight scenes, it was a bit weird due to unusual slow motion effects just to put emphasis on the fact that they are the Timerangers.
Overall, it was a strong start in this series, but the unusual use of CGI partly ruined it for me. But hey, it was created during the year 2000 and if just plainly ignored it, Timeranger has the makings of one good sci-fi series that in my opinion, it never felt like an average Super Sentai series. Asides from that, the strong introduction of most characters in the series makes this opening quite good. If there is one thing I can complain about this series asides from the mediocre CGI is that Blue was quite forgettable and the weird slow motion effects.
