Gundam Wing: Zechs Merquise aka Milliardo Peacecraft

gundam wing cosplay - zechs merquise aka milliardo peacecraft
Source: Crunchyroll

OZ’s ace mobile suit pilot, Zechs Merquis is well known as the “Lightning Count” or “Lightning Baron” due to his high-speed fighting style, striking his enemies without warning. He wears a mask supposedly to hide a facial deformity, but in reality, it is to hide his true identity, Milliardo Peacecraft, the lost son of the pacifist Peacecraft family. The Peacecrafts were massacred by the United Earth Sphere Alliance, who considered King Peacecraft a threat to their complete and toral rule of Earth and the colonies. Zechs worked his way through the inside to become an OZ soldier in order to seek revenge on the Alliance for the murder of his family.

Wow, this series is definitely one of the classics, and I’m happy to see a detailed cosplay of one of my favorite characters. Thanks again to Fumiki for sending this in!

Gundam AGE Begins this October 9th!

The official site of the latest addition to the long running Gundam franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam AGE confirms the official air date of the series! The new series will be airing on MBS・TBS on October 9th at 5:00pm.

The new series will have three generations of "father, child, and descendant" as the lead characters. The main characters pilot the Gundam unit to fight against an unknown attacking enemy (UE) and save Earth in a "One Hundred Year War" — an apparent homage to the One Year War of the first Gundam series. The series takes place in the A.G. aka Advance Generation timeline.

Hino: No Talking Gundams on Gundam AGE

Rumors circulated the internet that the new Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam AGE will feature talking Gundams. Level-5 CEO and self-proclaimed Gundam fan, Akihiro Hino assures fans that all the Gundam units in this series will not speak.

Level-5 is involved with making a game based on the said series, also Hino himself is working on the script of the series. This new series seems to target the younger demographic, one of the possible reasons why said rumor exist. While the series does have a number of elements that Hino expects to be well received by children, he promised to protect the Gundam license.

Mobile Suit Gundam AGE Press Conference

The press conference of the upcoming 14th Gundam TV series, Mobile Suit Gundam AGE has been released and subbed for your viewing pleasure. The series stars three generations of protagonist who are fighting the UE for 100 years.

Things that are confirmed during the 20-minute press conference includes that it will run for a straight year. Also, the subject of its target market was also brought up, which most people thought will be kids based on the early materials. The target however seems to be "everybody who likes Gundam," appealing to adults who haven't watched Gundam in a while as well as the longtime hardcore fans.

The focus will seriously be on generations. There will be a child's look on war, then a father with his child and a grandfather with his children as well as the outlook of the children themselves. "Perspective" of war is also a focus. Gundam's serious examination of war will be an important mainstay.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin Anime Announced!

The upcoming August issue of Monthly Gundam Ace will announce that the new anime project will be the anime adaptation of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin manga by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko!

The manga is the re-imagining of the very first Mobile Suit Gundam anime except some few minor additions such as the rise of Zeon, a more detailed look on Char's backstory and the development of the Mobile Suits while retaining the same story and events that happened in the original anime. To put it simply, Sunrise's excuse to have a remake of the original Gundam anime in HD.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin took place in the year Universal Century 0079, and the eighth month of a vicious war between the Earth Federation and a breakaway nation of space colonists, the Principality of Zeon. The story follows the crew of the ship White Base, as they fight to ferry the experimental RX-78 Gundam Mobile Suit to the Federation base at Jaburo.

And like the original anime, Sunrise is in-charge with the animation.

Gives me more reasons to re-watch the original Gundam anime and write a review about it! Also, I find it Sunrise's way of saying sorry to its hardcore UC fans due to Gundam AGE.

New Gundam Project Confirmed

It's official. Rumors about a new Gundam series has been circulating various message boards online until finally, it is confirmed on the official Japanese Gundam website that a new Gundam project will be revealed on a live event this June 13th!

The live event will be streamed on the Bandai Channel website but it will be available on Japanese IP addresses. The live event will start at 1:30pm in Japan (Go figure the time in your area!).

An English Twitter account of Bluefin, Bandai's distributor in the United States, had retweeted a message last month that said, "A new Gundam series will be announced during the Tokyo Toy Show....about 3 weeks." However, the message has since been deleted. This year, the International Tokyo Toy Show will run from June 16 to 19.

Director Seiji Mizushima (Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Fullmetal Alchemist) emphasized that he has nothing to do with the new Gundam project, but added that there are many people involved from the Gundam 00 staff.

Bandai Wins Gundam Bootleg Suit vs. Hongli

Bandai successfully sued the Chinese toy manufacturer Hongli for violating its trademarks with toys that closely resembled the designs in Mobile Suit Gundam and BB Senshi Sangokuden plastic models. Bandai filed the suit in November of 2009.

As a result, Hongli issued a public apology to Bandai, via an ad in the May 13 edition of the 21st Century Business News newspaper. The Chinese court also ordered Hongli to pay damages and Bandai's legal fees totaling 820,000 yuan (about 10 million yen or US$130,000), and to stop selling of the offending goods.

Hongli appealed the original ruling, but the Beijing High Court upheld the ruling on December 17, 2010. In addition to the apology, Bandai is still working to ensure that the rest of the ruling is carried out.

Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz OVA Review

Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz is a three part OVA following to the events that happened to the original series a year later. Aside from being the continuation of the TV series, it also revealed details regarding the past of the Gundam pilots and the true objective behind Operation Meteor.

After Colony 196, a year after the battle between the colonies and Earth, now called, the Eve Wars (due to the fact that it happened in December), the colonies and Earth created an organization called, Earth Sphere Unified Nation (ESUN) and the one protecting the peace is an organization called, Preventers led by Lady Une. Seeing that the Gundams have no use, they decided to destroy it less Altron.

But this peace would be slightly halted thanks to colony L3 X-18999, led by Mariemaia Krushienada, Trieze’s daughter who stages a rebellion against ESUN and kidnaps its Vice Foreign Minister, Relena Darlian who is on a diplomatic mission on the said colony. Because of this, the Gundam pilots investigates and learns that her grandfather, Dekim Barton is behind all of this and plans to go with the original Operation Meteor, in which they will drop one colony to Earth and let the Gundams run wild with the ensuing chaos.

Can the Gundam pilots stop Dekim considering that Wufei is now against them? That is for us to find out.

On to the review, if you watched the original series prior to watching this OVA, one of the obvious changes you see is the redesigns on the five main Gundams. To be honest, I find it confusing at first since it doesn’t make sense in the first place. I mean, you decided to upgrade your MS just for the sake of destroying it? It turns out they have thought of it, decided to retcon these designs (via each character flashback), and made it so yeah, problem solved.

Now to the redesigns, I really love most of it. Deathscythe Hell’s design is more demonic and reminisced Batman’s character design when jumping on the dark. Sandrock’s cloak added the “dessert-feel” in it. Altron’s redesign made it a bit more dragonic and as for Wing ZERO, it made it more angelic. The only redesign that I dislike is HeavyArms due to the bad coloring of the suit. But hey, the half-clown mask is a really good touch.

As for the story, it reminded me a lot of the last arc of the anime in which involves Millardo becoming the new symbol of the colonies in which they decided to invade Earth with him leading the group and the Gundam pilots and their allies will stop him. In this OVA, we have two Millardo’s, in the form of Wufei and Mariemaia.

Wufei here is the “Millardo” in this OVA in terms of his beliefs. Both of them have somewhat lost faith with the people of Earth and decided to fight them. As for Mariemaia, she is the Millardo in terms of being a puppet to one guy. This aspect of the OVA that bored me since that the last part of the original series is for me, one of the bad parts of the entire series. Just like the last part of the original series, the fights make up for it.

Heck, the best part of the series is the fight between Wing Gundam ZERO Custom and Altron Gundam Custom! It was intense, the tension build in the earlier episodes made this fight really fun to watch, that is why it is so good. As for the other fights, it was good, especially the last fight at the end of the OVA, especially when Zechs and Noin are back again and fought side by side with the Gundam pilots which cause the author to gush a bit.

The flashback scenes of each Gundam pilots add up to the character development of each pilot. Each flashback defines each character and why they acted like that in the main series. No wonder Heero is a bit cold towards Relena in the earlier episodes and no wonder Trowa is quite a shut in, in the earlier episodes prior to his amnesia!

Overall, the OVA is quite a good treat to Gundam Wing fans due to the redesigned Gundams (especially Wing ZERO), the fights and the trademarked strong political struggle that the series is known for. Like I said earlier, my only disappointment in this OVA is the plot itself since it felt like recycled from the last story arc with a few minor changes to make it different from the said arc.

Son Goku, Arale and Gundam Cheers Up Japan

Last time, I have posted artworks created by Inoue Takehiko and Noizi Ito in which they use it to show their support to the victims of the March 11 earthquake.

Asides from that, Akira Toriyama, best known for his works Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump and Okawara Kunio who makes mecha designs for the Gundam franchise posted art to cheer up Japan in this disaster!

Toriyama drew two of his famous characters Son Goku of Dragon Ball and Arale-chan of Dr. Slump, riding the Kinto'un Cloud (Flying Nimbus in some dubs), shouting the word "Ganbare!!", which translates roughly to "Do your best!!"

This art was posted on the official Shonen Jump website along with it are messages coming from the editors for the victims and families. He then wrote a message for earthquake victims next to the art: "To everyone affected in the disaster, it is really very difficult, but please don’t give up and do your best!"

Okawara Kunio tweeted this image of the classic RX78-2 Gundam (for the uninitiated, this is the original Gundam back in the franchise's main universe, the Universal Century) holding a Japanese flag with the words, "Ganbare Nippon!" which is translated as, "Do your best, Japan!" written underneath.

Okawa also included the comment, "Today, I am wishing well to the victims of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear explosions. Thank you to the people who are involved with the relief, and the people in the Japan Self-Defense Corps. Do your best, Japan. Do your best, Japan."

Seeing more of the original artist drawing artworks of the their famous characters to encourage Japan is a really touching sight to see. Hopefully, we will see more of it in the coming days.

Gundam Unicorn 4 Release Date, Announced!

After the recent release of the third episode of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn's third episode, The Ghost of Laplace via Playstation Network (its BluRay and DVD release is still in April), it is recently announced on a brochure (below) that the fourth episode, titled as At the Bottom of the Gravity Well will be released on Autumn 2011!

Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn is a six-part OVA series which is based on a series of novels of the same name. The series begins in U.C. 0001, at the very beginning of human space colonization, when a space colony called Laplace is destroyed. The main story takes place in UC 0096, three years after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack and 27 years before Gundam F91.

The story revolves around Banagher Links, a seemingly normal boy living and going to school in the space colonies. His life changes one day when he meets a girl named Audrey Burne, as the encounter brings him into contact with a new Gundam and its connections to an item called "Laplace's Box."

Based on the title, it seems that the fourth episode will cover the events that happened in the sixth volume of the novel. It is not sure if it will also cover the events that happened in the seventh volume, Black Unicorn.

Chinese Gundam Returns... With Upgrades!

The infamous orange Gundam statue found in China's Chengdu Guosetianxiang Amusement Park returns... with some upgrades! Wondering if it is still orange, yes it is still orange and kinda looks like a love child between the original Gundam and a Zaku!

A photograph posted by a Twitter user, otoutosama featured this upgrade Gundam statue in which earlier reports denied by the said amusement park that the previously erected statue is an original design (!) and not a copy of the original Gundam.

Later on, a public relations representative added that they are working on some modifications. And lo, just recently, we have this image! What can you say about this newly upgraded Gundam statue?

Mobile Suit Gundam 01 – The Gundam Stands on Solid Ground!! Review

The original Gundam, droppin' beats, yo!

Before Setsuna fell in love with his Gundam, before Shinn ruined SEED Destiny, before Lacus entertained us with her songs and ended up leading a military faction in SEED, before we have psychics running X, before Gundams where used for martial arts tournaments. And most especially, before we have five pretty boys started piloting their respective Gundams, we have Amuro reading a manual on how the heck he will pilot Earth’s newest mobile suit called, Gundam! Yep, yet another retro first episode review and this time, we have the original Gundam show!

The first episode basically is this in a nutshell; everyone in the colony called Side 7 must evacuate in a bunker because of a battleship will arrive in their area. Enter Amuro who is one of those who evacuated. Because of the Zeon attack (the bad guys), who learned that the Earth Federation has new mobile suits, naturally, one guy from their group wants to act “hero” and decides to ruin the supposed recon mission, Amuro looks for his father and this is when we saw the very first Gundam and Amuro mets his father, Tem.

Because of the explosion and he picks a manual, reads it. After Fray Bow appears and another attack caused by a Zaku happened, after seeing Fray Bow cry along with the corpses, he pilots the Gundam and fights the Zaku, which ends up opening a hole in the colony. This causes the engineers (his father and his assistant) to fly out of the colony, fights the other Zaku, wins and the people from the White Base needs Amuro’s help to move more MS. So yeah, that is how the original series rolled.

Amuro Ray, the only Gundam pilot that I saw reading his MS's manual.

Anyways, the first episode was a really good opening to the series. Amuro is just a regular teenager who ends up piloting a Gundam... that needs to reads a manual. Sounds familiar? If you watched SEED, this same thing happened to Kira except he decodes Strike’s computers and pilots it. What makes it more similar is that both of them are inexperience in terms of piloting this stuff and uses their respective Gundam’s weakest weapons.

Here’s more SEED similarity. ZAFT is on a mission to discover EAF’s new Mobile Suits which of course, the Gundams. But unlike what the members of Zeon members did who just takes pictures, ZAFT here steals EAF’s Gundams! Now I understand why SEED is considered the modern take of the original Gundam series.

Let’s go back to the original Gundam’s first episode. In this episode, it established that Zeon and Earth are fighting for a month now and it seems that Earth is losing, that is why with the help of Tem Ray, they created their own mobile suits and it turns out that it is stronger than an average Zaku! Because of this, I am starting to wonder the reason why Side 3 aka Zeon wanted to become independent with Earth? Is it because of their own egos or something else?

To the characters, Amuro here is just your average teenager who is a mechanical genius that ends up piloting a Gundam for him to save his colony from the attack made by the Zaku. Unlike the pilots after Amuro, he is no pretty boy, which makes him authentic as a teenage pilot and not as a fashion model or a pop idol. What makes him more of an authentic teenager is that, we saw fear in his eyes when the Zaku attacked him add the fact that he is panicking when he doesn’t know what weapons that his mobile suit has!

Char, Gundam's first masked villian. Him being a badass is just a bonus

Fraw Bow is just one female support character that I might forget. Skip. Now I will talk about my first impression regarding Char! One of the things that bothered me before I watched this anime is that, what’s with the Char love? Now I understand. He is Amuro’s opposite. He is experienced in terms of war, he is serious and he wears a mask with that reminded me a little of Darth’s helmet design!

As for the original Gundam, it looks simple. If I will compare its specs with the newer Gundam models, the original Gundam will look weak beside them. But hey, it was designed to fight against Zeon’s Zakus, so there is no apparent reason on why they should overpower it! Plus, the design of the original Gundam looks amazing even now. I guess it’s the simplicity and the functions that seems realistic (which I heard, it is possible that they can make the original Gundam in real life!) makes this MS lovable.

Overall, the first episode is one heck of a first episode. The animation back in the day tried itself to innovate with the concepts of the show, and it did. Seeing the Side 7 colony from outer space caused my jaw to drop a little due to how beautiful the animation is. As for the fights, this is what I expect with a first time Gundam pilot. Amuro is seriously panicking because he don’t know where the heck are the weapons are! This episode cause me to watch the next episode if I have time, and oh, the next episode screams more of Gundam SEED!
